6mo constantly slamming her feet down

WifiNappies · 04/04/2012 15:19

Whenever she's on her back or sitting up my DD is constantly slamming her feet (heels) on the floor. Sometimes her arms too. It's like she's having a fit or something but she's perfectly awake! It looks so painful because she does it so hard (she's got freakishly strong legs) so even on carpet/mat it must hurt. My DH put insulation pipe all round her changing table because she's a bit long for the mat and she was doing it against the wood Shock

She loves swimming and baths and does the same on the water so is it like she doesn't realise she's on dry land or something? Confused

Is it normal? other babies I know don't seem to do it.

Wind???????

My DS does this too, with his feet anyway not his arms and I don't think as frequently as your describing. He seems to enjoy it, doesn't seem to hurt him even though you like you say it is hard and if he does it while he's upstairs it sounds like he's about to oe through the ceiling! Like your DD he's strong on his feet and loves being stood up ( he's nearly 6mo btw). I don't see any reason to get concerned by it just seems to be something he does. HTH :)

MegMogAndOwl · 04/04/2012 15:29

My dd is 7 months and does this too. It doesn't seem to matter what surface she's lying on either. It's so noisy when she does it in her crib it sounds like she's doing DIY! It makes her mobile shake do assume she does it to make it move?

My friends dd does it as well, I guess it's fairly normal. I'm sure they wouldn't do it if it hurt a lot. :)

simonthedog · 04/04/2012 15:33

My DD used to do this, we called it double leg slams. I don't think it's anything to worry about. She's 5 now and doesn't do it anymore!

Timeoutofmind · 04/04/2012 16:12

My DD did this loads at this age, she still does it sometimes at 15mo.

StuckUpTheFezziwigTree · 04/04/2012 16:15

My DD has done this for a long time too. In fact she was a big kicker even when she was inside me! She's now 17 months and has legs of pure muscle. No problems, just won't sit still for a minute. Always walking, climbing etc. she will be fine Smile

Mich100 · 04/04/2012 17:35

My DS does it too. He has thighs like a prop forward at 24 weeksWink

nickelhasababy · 04/04/2012 17:36

i wonder if it's to do with trying to crawl?

DD is 16 weeks, and she pushes her legs against surfaces, so I could see that a 6mo would be trying it and getting frustrated there's no movement so kicking instead?

shushpenfold · 04/04/2012 17:38

My dd2 did this so much and with such force that she broke the cot!!! She was on a mattress on the floor at 9 months because of it but she definitely slept more soundly. She's now 7 and is tall but not particularly athletic...very stroppy though so perhaps it's a determination thing!

2ombie5layer · 04/04/2012 17:42

My DD2 also does this. She is just over 6MO too. She has been doing this pretty much since she was born and seems to love it. She bangs both her legs down at once and straightens and locks her arms too. I dont lie her on the floor as I did with DS or DD1, but lie her on a folded sleeping mat to give her a bit of cushioning.

My DD2 is also very strong in her legs and for weeks now likes to push herself up onto her feet when she's on my knee. (If only she'd stop throwing her head back so she could keep her balance she'd be sitting now)

CarpeJugulum · 04/04/2012 17:46

18mo DS still doing this - and I second the rugby player legs Grin

After discussing with other mums who all gave birth at the same time, DS was walking a good couple of months before their DC, and now is far steadier than they seem to be.

(and as a PFB boast, he now plays football really well with DH and I'm thinking of finding a talent scout Wink)

featherbag · 04/04/2012 23:22

6mo DS does exactly the same, we've started calling him BamBam as that's the noise he makes loud enough to hear downstairs when he's in his cot! He seems to do it when he's awake and happy/excited, but I've also seen him doing it while fast asleep too, so no idea why they do it but I wouldn't worry!

Yet again I've missed it. Judging by the responses I think Id rather not know, but curiosity is a strange thing.

WifiNappies · 05/04/2012 12:03

Wow how did this thread lead to a 'sick' response? I can't even imagine what it was [naive face]

Thanks all for the responses. She was a big kicker in the womb and seems desperate to get moving so very much like your DC's I think. She does have legs like Fatima Whitbread bless 'er.

Wifi - it was nothing to do with your post, just a idiotic little troll who thought it would be funny to post obscenities all over the boards.
