Any tips on how to stop thumb - sucking?

Hi ladies

DS is 2.3 and loves his thumb. The dentist said this morning he really needs to stop now, but didn't otherwise give us any advice on how to do it.

Please let me know how you managed to get your child to stop, how long they sucked for and whether it has had any lasting effect on his teeth.

DS's teeth do protrude, but I thought that would correct itself once he stopped, although the dentist didn't seem to think so.

Thanks

DS1's teeth were like that picture.

His profile was very much like "Ben" here and is now like the age 11 picture.

Soup, I was going by what my dentist told me a couple of weeks ago...was interested because of my niece being as she still sucks her thumb. He said it can't be sorted. He always asks me if Dd sucks her thumb so I asked why he asks, as she doesn't and no dummies or bottles either, but she does still use a sippy cup, and that was what he told me...but my niece is 15, so that might be the difference I suppose.

Yes, by 15 she's probably mostly stopped growing and I think that's the key. if they still have lots of growing to do, I think they can fix it by forcing the jaws to grow properly which corrects the damage.

I don't pretend to understand it completely but the impression I get is that it is very hard work once they are past 10 or so.

But was your Ds's upper jaw like the jaw shape in my link? because that's how nieces is.

As far as I can remember, very similar. It was nearly 6 years ago though and, TBH, I never looked closely [shudder].
