Nanny worried about DD's feet

Hi - I've posted on here a few times about DD taking her time with cruising, pulling up etc. She's started to take a few unaided steps at 16.5 months, but our nanny expressed concern that she is not walking with her feet completely flat - she seems to use the insides of her feet too much. It's more pronounced when she is unaided, they are pretty flat with the push-along etc.

I've booked her in to see a physio, but that's not until Saturday. Does anyone have any views on whether this is likely to be a serious problem? She can stand unaided. I'd really appreciate any thoughts.

was she sitting up early???? is she very flexible.. ie.. stretching for toys

It's called pronation and is common. It usually gets better on its own as they grow older, but the physio will let you know if it's an issue at this age.

Ds had this but it was only spotted by a shoe fitter when he was about 4. Once she pointed it out I could see his gait was affected by it.

We were referred to physio but they said to just watch and wait, and to make sure his shoes were supportive around the ankle. He's now 5.5 and it's virtually corrected itself.

Thanks for the replies.

poppiesmom - she sat up at 6 months on the dot, so not especially early, but not late. I wouldn't say she looks especially flexible, just "normal" (whatever that is!) really.

suzikettles - thank you, that's really helpful. It doesn't look that bad to me, and she's getting much better with her walking, but the nanny made a massive deal of it, which has freaked me out.

Ds has this and he has a slighted inverted pelvis which exacerbates it. He sees a specialist podiatrist who fits him with insoles to straighten his ankles. He is 10 now and it is still a bit of a problem, but is improving.

My cousin's daughter had this, and it was corrected with special shoes

Can you see the local MW?They are usually good at testing this sort of thing at the local weekly clinics.

My ds was born with club feet which corrected themselves but is now very flat footed and his ankles sort of turn down as he walks. He's still under the paediatrician for it but they said it will probably correct itself but if not he will need insoles but not until he's 4 or 5.

Entirely normal in toddlers. You don't get arches in your feet until you've been walking for a while.

Sensible shoes, watch & wait.

DS had this, saw a podiatrist (sp?) at about 18 months, watch and wait, now at 4 no problems.

I can see it may have worried you but be pleased you have a nanny that notices and comments on anything she feels may be a problem. You would prob feel more angry if you noticed and the nanny never said anything.
It generally self corrects, just keep and eye on it but don't keep telling child to put whole foot down as it may make them anxious about walking.
