DS is 6.5m and I was wondering what age you can give tap water. At the moment I am still using cool boiled water, am I going to have to carry a supply around with me on warm days?

I offered tap water from 6 months.

QED · 02/04/2012 20:37

I did from 6 months.

Ask your HV and see what they say?

I did from 6 months ish after speaking to mine. We are in NW England and so the water is "softer" up here.

Thanks - wouldn't ask our HV anything as she gives bad advice i.e. put sudo cream or E45 on your baby's eczema! made it much worse. Will start on tap water then as understand bottled water is bad due to elevated levels of something or other.

My HV said a year! Have I been pointlessly boiling and cooling for no reason?
I'm so glad I opened this thread!

Get a grip ladies, 6 months is fine.

Ooh that was a bit direct.

BlackOutTheSun · 02/04/2012 21:22

6 months, and you can out sudocream or e45 for eczema

have you seen the dr about it?

candr · 02/04/2012 21:25

Dr said that E45 contains lanolin which is an irritant and something in Sudo cream not good either. Have got Diprobase now.
Am pleased I can now just use the tap and give the poor kettle a break.

From 6 months, water from the tap is fine.

Another question, I hav been told bottled water is not good for babies so what do people do if they are on holiday somewhere you can't drink tap water?

The NHS website gives info on bottled water and babies. I can't link it, so have a look.

3boysandagirl · 04/04/2012 11:04

There are types of low salt boiled water you could use but you would still have to boil it as it's not sterile (if making up formula.) The bottle would have to have less then 200mg a litre of Sodium and no more then 250mg a litre of Sulphate.

candr Most places where you cannot drink the tap water sell water which is not "bottled water" in the sense that you buy in the UK (with large amounts of mineral salts in) but simply purified water the same as you would otherwise get out of the tap. Just buy that - it'll be the cheapest anyway.
