16 month old dd not coming out with any new words

My dd has six or seven words. Some she says independently, others if looking at a book or joining in a song

But shes not come out with anything new in last few weeks/ month despite understanding more new words. She copies a lot and imitates sounds buy nothing new. Almost like she's stagnated a bit

Is this normal? Does it go in phases?

I am sure it is just a quiet phase and that she will soon be rattling on and you will be desperate for some quiet time. But I am no expert (infact quite the opposite, 1 ds deaf and quite as a mouse for years) and just wanted to bump this so that the clever and wise mnrs can come and help you properly.

I'm waiting for my 28 month old to come out with more words. She is still only 16 month so there is plenty of time for her to start talking

It's early yet. Also, often they are saying words but not intelligible ones. I think 18 month old DD can say shoes, cheese, please and teeth but they all sound like shchzzsh to me.

Give it a couple more months and you might find she takes off again.

In general, the first 50 words take ages (around 6 months) and then they start using new words every day. Absolutely normal!

im waiting for my 15 month old to say anything. The most we've had is dadadadadadadada!

My 17mo only has two words...

flaxseed · 01/04/2012 19:57

Thank you that's helpful. I don't really know how language works, so I thought she would start saying a lot more after the initial burst but I guess not!

When I drive, we often repeat words or sounds and she's definitely very interested in trying. Sometimes she copies sounds that I know are hard for her but then nothing ever transpires.

I am not concerned about her speed and i know the range is huge for babies talk - but I just wanted to know if they go in phases as it were

My eldest definitely had bursts where her language would take a huge leap forward. She's 4 now so I can't really remember how long she took with first words (bad mother!) but I when she started putting words together and, later, talking in proper sentences it just happened literally overnight. In the times that she didn't seem to be coming out with anything new language-wise she would quite often be learning something else (potty training, climbing, even dropping her nap!)

So yes, I would have thought that your DD is totally normal. Just keep talking with her and reading to her and she'll no doubt have another leap forward with language soon.
