Should I be worried about DD's drawing

DD is almost four and I would say pretty much average developmentally wise. She likes painting and scribbling but I've noticed never really draws anything. In the past she has done a basic face (two dots for eyes, one dot for nose, big smiley face in a circle) and can draw circles and approximate squares freehand, but usually and most recently she just scribbles or likes to get covered in paint :-) Is this normal or should I mention it to pre-school? She is not good at writing either, but from what I've read that can vary quite a lot. But I wondered if figurative drawing was an important milestone she's missing. Any advice appreciated!

I wouldn't be worried, none of mine ever produced much that looked like anything unless the were doing a structured art thing at that age.

What ABIBF said. DS1 never drew anything at all before starting school (very nearly 5yo). He's now in y7 and got a very high mark in Art...Level 6? 7c? something like that.

sounds normal to me!

ds1 is nearly 4 and had just scribbled, never tried to draw anything in particular where as ds2 (2 1/2) was trying to draw pictures. One day he was scribbling away and DH asked him to draw a house.....a few minutes later he'd produced a proper drawing of a house with windows, doors, sun, clouds, grass and I had no idea he could do it.

Ask pre school what she draws or paints - ds's nursery has got him to draw quite a few pictures that have been sent home so I can see the evidence.

I'd say its normal, I hope so anyway! My DS is 4.5, he has never really drawn anything worth speaking of, it just doesn't interest him. Pre school try to encourage him, but the result is usually scribbles. Recently though the scribbles have been coming home with his name written on them. He is happy to write letters because it interests him, and doesn't seem to be having any trouble with it.

sounds normal the fact that she does dots for eyes and nose and a smile is fantastic, my dd was exactly the same, she is now 5 and her drawings are much the same but now she adds hair, ears, body, but she still likes a good old scribble x

sounds normal to me too
she'll start adding stuff over time, afterall the most important bits for communication are on the face

Fine for nearly four! Please don't worry.

MyDogShitsShoes · 03/04/2012 04:01

I still can't draw anything recognisable as a human face!

In all seriousness she sounds exactly normal for her age. My almost 4 year old niece recently presented me with a piece of paper covered in red paint.

Me: this is lovely, what is it.
Dn: an axe with blood on it.

I've advised my sister to sleep with the lights on.

OOH I missed the deleted messages!

Thanks all, I am comforted. :)

MyDog, everything DD creates is ALWAYS 'a picture of me, dancing'. (her, not me). She has a good imagination, obv. ;)

Fwiw, dd1 exactly the same, and couldn't write her name before starting school either. Has more than caught up in those areas.
