I have 22m DS who in my opinion (from other kids i have actually met) seems about average.

He has quuite a few words, increasing everyday, understandable to us but not necessarily clear yet to others, not yet speaking in sentances, knows all colours if you ask him to point to them but can only say yellow and blue, can recognise all numbers 0 to 9 if you ask him to point to them but can't count. Loves playing with his shape sorters, drum, toy garage and listening to his nursery rhymes. He is a real daredevil, will climb very high slides and climbing frames. Typical nearly 2 year old i would say.

Then when i read mumsnet i'm reading that nearly 2 year olds can do 50 piece jigsaws, read sentences, ride bikes and the replies to those posts say that is all perfectly normal. Are these things really normal and is my boy backward or are they advanced (but within the normal spectrum) and the posters don't want to swell the OP head

Any query on Gifted and Talented has to be met with "oh, perfectly normal" - no matter how able or advanced the child in question is Grin

PrisonerOfWaugh · 31/03/2012 23:13

Don't be daft!

He sounds fine for 22 months, or in fact ahead of the curve. I have a 2y6m boy who cannot name colours, recognise any letters/numbers or jump two footed; but he can sing in tune, do a 20 piece jigsaw and pick his nose and eat the results with relish. I'm not worried.

MN is a particular beast, and the parental memory is often selective!

DairyNips · 31/03/2012 23:14

Er, no, my 2yo ds2 can't do 50 piece jigsaws or read sentences or eide a bikeGrin

He is a very good talker but is only just learning his colours , he can sometimes count to 5 but often in the wrong order and couldn't point outlet numbers. Your ds sounds perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry at allSmile

OldMotherDismass · 31/03/2012 23:14

Your ds sounds like he is doing just great. He isn't even two yet, just let him develop at his own pace.

Neither of my DC could ride bikes, do jigsaws, recognise letters or numbers or read at that age. DD hardly said anything at that age and can't remember about knowledge of colours.

Your DS sounds pretty advanced to me :)

tethersend · 31/03/2012 23:20

My DD had only just started walking at 22 months.

LoopyLoopsIsTentativelyBack · 31/03/2012 23:23

MN is full of imaginary clever kids. Competitive parenting at its best. It's all in their heads, don't worry.

He sounds lovely and normal.

Morph2 · 31/03/2012 23:24

thanks for all the replies, my post was a abit tongue in cheek as i know theres nothing wrong with my boy but you know what its like sometimes when you read on mumsnet what it is perfectly normal for other kids of the same age to be doing!!

According to my baby book at 24 months babies should be at the two-word stage and be able to make mini sentences like "go here" "my cup". Your son sounds like he is developing normally, maybe a bit slow with language but still on the normal spectrum and his number skills sound like they are at a higher level than would be expected for his age.

duchesse · 31/03/2012 23:37

Wow, prisoner, that is advanced- bogeys with relish at such a young age! Mine only like ketchup with theirs.

KatieW89 · 31/03/2012 23:39

My son only started being able to tell me all the colours within the last few months and hes nearly 4. He can count but only to 20 and has no interest in doing puzzles and im not sure he could if he tried.
But he has fantastic fun at his pre school and lots of friends and has learnt to interact with other kids and behave well when hes there at least and I think these things are much more important,
All to quickly they are in school and have to learn and sit at a table most the day so i personally think let them play and learn at their own pace while theyre still allowed to. xx

FidgetPie · 31/03/2012 23:46

Read sentences? Did someone say that?!
My 23 month old (who I, naturally, think is a genius!) can't recognise any letters (at least not that I have taught her/tested - who knows what educational evils nursery or grandma might have tried). If letter/number recognition is really likely to have any success I might start giving that a try - we haven't tried anything written down yet.

I think my 2 yo DD is super bright because she is my first child and I am constantly amazed by what she can do. But-her cousins are boys who IMO are slower than girls. All kids are different and do stuff at different times. Yours sounds normal to me.

CecilyP · 01/04/2012 09:06

Sounds normal to me. Think he is actually doing pretty well.
