Bunk Beds

mama2moo · 30/03/2012 21:38

My dds are 4yo and 2yo and both now in beds. Their room is big enough but its tight.

I have been looking at bunk beds all day! Am I better off spending more and getting ones like this or will a ladder be ok for my eldest?

Thanks Smile

Well they're not reccomended until the children are 6. But my 7 year old and my 4 year old got them recently...they're great BUT the 4 year old has fallen off the top bunk once and we've only had them for 2 weeks!

I wouldn't put a 4 year old in a top bunk at all...it's very dodgy.

we've just got bunks for my youngest 2 who are 4 and nearly 3 and it's working out fine.

we have thuka shorty bunks with a sloping ladder.
love them for the versatility

purpleflower123 · 30/03/2012 22:27

DS and DD had hae bunk beds since they were 2 and 4, never had any problems :)

Bumperlicious · 30/03/2012 22:46

Dd2 (18mo) just climbed out of her cot today. I fear we are going to be looking at bunk beds soon....

IllegitimateGruffaloChild · 30/03/2012 22:51

I fancy bunk beds for my 2. (same age as OP's)

If they'd shut up sleep nicely in the same room I think it'd be great. Although this is irrelevant to you OP as yours already share a room.

The things that put me off bunk beds are changing sheets. Nightmares during night time wee routines for the top sleeper. Any sickness bug turning into something from a horror film.

AwkwardMary · 30/03/2012 23:56

Here is a link to describe the dangers of younger children sleeping in the top...it is a sad story so be warned if you're feeling hormonal.

I would do it. Am planning to put ds in lower bunk until dc2 old enough to join him in bunk beds, but think it'll be fine.
That article is about when they aren't assembled properly. Wouldn't put me off.

startail · 31/03/2012 00:16

DD2 had a 1/2 hight bunk from 3, when she moved out of her cot. (cot had had it's side lowered for ages, because she could climb out.)

DD1 would climb anything so bunk didn't phase her at all.

Has had a high sleeper since she was about 6. DD2 has fallen out of this when about 3 or 4.
They didn't tell me till years later because DD2 knew she wasn't allowed up there.

Duckypoohs · 31/03/2012 00:44

No experience but will be interested in replies, will be looking to get bunkbeds once ds2 out of his cot. As an aside what utter utter twats a couple of the people responding to that article are, bottom half of the internet indeed.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2012 00:47

AwkwardMary, that story is indeed tragic, but also involved a bunk bed which was not made up correctly - the barriers had been removed on the wall side because they were broken, IIRC.

It does however serve as a warning to be sure any bunk beds are correctly assembled, especially if they are old/second hand and original instructions have been lost.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2012 00:50

I do think that 4 is very young, though. I'm not sure I would be happy about it.

Would a toddler bed fit for the youngest to make some space until getting bunkbeds when DC1 is a bit older?

SkipTheLightFanjango · 31/03/2012 00:50

My ds2 went top bunk at 3.5yrs. All was fine. Be sure to secure the side protestion and make sure the mattress does not exceed the safe depth. IME it is the one on the bottom bunk who falls out as there is no sode protection!

SkipTheLightFanjango · 31/03/2012 00:52

FFS protection and side..need to replace batteries in this bloomin keyboard..takes 3 tries and then I've had a blonde moment and it's gone Grin

mama2moo · 31/03/2012 09:21

Thanks all. AwkwardMary - I read that story a while ago which put me off. But, my 4 year old is very old for her age. I have been looking at mattresses and Next do one that is only 11cm thick. Most recommend having one at least 15cm for the top.

Are the shorty ones lower in height then the normal ones? My only worry with those is that my 4yo is quite tall for her age and I dont want to have to replace them in a few years.

My Ds's 2 and 6 have been in bunk beds around 6 months Ds1 had a mid sleeper from around 3 and was fine moved into the bunk beds at 5 and ds2 moved into the bottom bunk straight from his cot.

wishiwasonholiday · 31/03/2012 09:36

My 7 year old had a ladder at about 3 and was fine, my 2 year old can get up the ladder but can't get back down.

amigagal · 31/03/2012 21:46

Our two boys have been in bunkbeds since 3.5 and 18 months, for just over a year now. No problems at all. Older one has never fallen out the top. Younger one learnt to climb up very quickly, although at 2.6 doesn't like coming down.

marytheresa · 03/06/2012 19:15

Hiya

We would like to get some bunk beds they are 7ft (210cm) long. The way the kids room is situated with wardrobes etc means that the bunk beds would have to be placed away about 2ft from the wall and not against it - the wall is not long enough only 5.5 ft. The head can go against the wall but the rest of the bunk bed would have to lead on from that. We can't move the wardrobe as this is about 7ft wide itself.

The bunk beds have a guard rail on each side on the top bunk.

My DD is 6.5 and she will be sleeping there, my DS is 3 and he'll be on the bottom bunk.

I'm just concerned about the safety issue, of the long-side of the bunk bed not being positioned against the wall.

Just want to know what anyone else would do.,

pps. The mattresses that we are getting are 14cm thick and so are at a safe height for the bunk.

stopthinkingsomuch · 06/06/2012 05:32

We have bunk beds. For first year we had the ladder against the wall and rule that 2 year old wasn't allowed up on top bunk. Just turned them round.
