They actually need full fat stuff so while I don't use it much, I've always used it for ds. As they get older you can use all sorts of other stuff e.g humous, cream cheese etc. I use just a bit, to soften it and make it easier to eat.

we dont eat butter in our household as none of like it, we use marg
cant see a problem as long as it is spread thinly

mszebra · 04/02/2006 15:14

butter is very healthy, well, relative to most things. What don't you like about butter?
You can put olive oil on instead, if you think it's somehow 'better'.

mszebra · 04/02/2006 15:14

oh, and it's always dripping in butter, in our house. I have 3 skinny kids, btw.

melarnz · 04/02/2006 15:24

i have no problem with butter. i just wanted to make sure she is old enough to eat it. there is so much stuff about weaning u can and cant do that its a little confusing at times

Butter is fine use thinly. If you are worried by the salt content you could use a low salt one.

paolosgirl · 04/02/2006 17:22

You can get low fat/no salt butter - and it's much better for you than trans-fatty acids and all the other questionnable chemicals (some of which have been linked to cancer) that they put in some margs.

honeybunny · 04/02/2006 18:28

My children all love butter and would eat it on its own and frequently do if we are cake baking. I myself am addicted to the stuff and could not ever consider using anything else on my morning piece of toast. I'm sure mine were lapping it up by 6months!!

I would also like to point out that we are a skinny household too (dh excepting, but don't tell him that! besides he's not huge, just not quite as skinny as the rest of us!)

Highlander · 04/02/2006 18:43

we use butter, but low salt. Much better than the crap they put in marg

SoupDragon · 04/02/2006 18:44

Butter is only churned milk!! (and salt - but you can avoid that)

bobbybobbobbingalong · 04/02/2006 19:13

Why isn't butter healthy?

Marg is processed to make it hard and has colourings in it. It still has salt.

Buy a low salt butter, or just give her dry toast.

mszebra · 04/02/2006 19:15

vestige of days when everyone was terrified of saturated fat... plus what if obesity is high in your family. Some Americans advise NO DAIRY at all before 12m, too.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 04/02/2006 19:17

Yeah, I did no dairy before 12 months too and as he wasn't having wheat either I didn't have to give dry toast. But if child is having milk etc, then no harm. Children need fat for their brains.

SoupDragon · 04/02/2006 19:58

Having butter on your toast is not what causes obesity The amount of fat you spread on toast etc forms a very small part of your diet.

Except when you plaster the butter onto hot toast made from sliced white bread...

Went on an Open University Summer School once - part of it was to melt down butter and different margarines to see what they were made of -butter and i think Flora were the purist but some of the others - yuk

Elibean · 04/02/2006 20:45

None of us eat butter, but I used to buy it specially for DD when she was younger - now she's 2, and eats Flora like the rest of us. I ate a ton of butter when I was a kid, and am allergic to it now (not as a result, I shouldn't think).
