If hes not asleep in there after 2 hours... What would you do?

15mo DS normally has his nap at 10, the clocks messed him up a bit I suppose. Anyway yesterday I put him down at 10, and he didn't actually sleep for 2 hours. I felt terrible because I'd just left him in there and he looked really tired so I just cant understand why he didn't fall asleep.

This morning the same has happened (except earlier at 9.30), he started laying on the floor, rubbing his eyes, lying on the sofa and pulling up his blanket, wanted his milk and dummy and yet its been an hour and still no sleep? I keep thinking he's gone off and then suddenly hear another kick.

I feel so awful having him in his cot for this long with no actual sleep going on. Its like I've banished him. But if I go in, he will see me and want to get up and play and could miss his nap. He is actually tired and needs it, this is the thing? There's just one teddy in there so nothing to play with.

WWYD?

If he's not crying then I would leave him. Some quiet rest is better than nothing and he may still fall asleep. Do you think there is a chance he's getting ready to drop his morning nap? I think DD at that age had only an afternoon nap, for about 2 hrs.

But as long as he's happy in his cot, just leave him and have a Brew in peace Smile

He does only have one nap a day and its the morning one. Its 2 hours normally.

He's not upset in there at all. I think tomorrow I might go to a morning class or something and see if we can start an 11am nap time (which suits me better anyway) I just feel like a cow bag for leaving him in there for so long!

Think that taking him out in the morning, say swimming or playgroup does sound like a good idea. Most toddlers have one nap at around this age but it is usually later, though not with every child obviously.

Badgerina · 29/03/2012 18:03

I would leave him. He'd cry if he needed to. If he doesn't fall asleep at this time, does he have a nap later in the day?

SootySweepandSue · 29/03/2012 18:06

I think a morning nap at the age is quite unusual. I would try an activity then nap after lunch.

The only method I have to get DD to take a nap is a buggy stroll. She wouldn't sleep in the cot for love nor money in the daytime.

If he associates naps and sleep with his cot and isn't sleeping surely he's just not tired?

knittynoodle · 29/03/2012 21:03

Urgh. It was awful. I took him out this morning and all was going really well, he fell asleep around 10.45 on the way home. I got home at 11 and gently lifted him out of the buggy and up the stairs to the flat (second floor)... he woke up and would not sleep again.

He seemed fairly happy so I thought ok, we'll try for another nap later.

I went out around 1 to town, and he seemed like he was going to fall asleep in the push chair. I thought I'd keep on walking till he did and then get a coffee in town while he naps. I walked for FOUR MILES and he was still not asleep. So I went home and put him in his cot. He fell asleep for 45 mins and woke up so miserable but at least he ate something.

Plan for tomorrow. Try for an 11am nap that's not in the buggy as the lifting process screwed me up. Swimming is a good idea, might try it! Grin

Badgerina, that situation rarely come's up because since 3mo he has always had a nap at 10am for 2 hours and I've been happy to play at home with him for a while in the am during breakfast, do house work while he naps and then go out in the afternoon either eating lunch out or at home before we leave. If we do have to go out in the morning he will sleep in his buggy but the times were always the same. I would just grab a coffee and read during those 2 hours if we were out. Its definitely the clocks/more light that's done it.

Agree it is unusual but I do know one child that has his nap in the morning and goes out in the afternoon. What is more unusual is having 2 naps a day when he is 15 months.

knittynoodle · 30/03/2012 10:22

He doesn't have 2 naps a day. He has one. For 2 hours. At 10am which this week had become 11-11.30 (despite making tired signs at 9.30) because he of the clocks and I was worried about him just laying in there alone for 2 hours.

Anyway, we are back to usual this morning. So its solved Grin and Im fairly happy with a morning nap as it gives me time to clean up and prepare for whatever we have planned in the afternoon. Thanks all.
