Hearing loss in young children

Hi there. I would like to hear from anyone who has children with high frequency hearing loss. My daughter's has deteriorated for the second year now and we're now looking at being referred. I wondered if anyone wanted to share their stories.

Not sure what frequency my DDs hearing loss was. She had grommets a year or so after the diagnosis of glue ear.
I was desperate to avoid my baby having an anaesthetic Blush
She is as right as rain now.

Thanks for your comments ripsishere. I don't think it's glue ear but damage to the hairs in the inner ear. Grommets is more common than you realise. I couple of my friends children had them when they were smaller.

My 4yo DD1 has hearing loss due to glue ear which is worse at high frequencies & she has a hearing aid which she gets on well with. She quite enjoys the novelty of having a hearing aid (she's one of 3 in her class that has one) but I don't know if that would be the same for a 7yo or whether she would be a bit more self conscious being that bit older? They do make them in a range of colours though & my DD1s one is tiny - quite often we both forget she even has it in (as is demonstrated in the number of times she's got into the bath with it in Blush). Luckily no harm done though Grin.

I would definitely get a referral as we were told that even mild hearing loss can have a significant impact on a child's development. Not to mention her concentration & energy levels are likely to improve as she's probably using a lot more energy than her peers as she needs to concentrate that much harder to follow what is being said in class.

Hi
Ask away. DS is 10 now he was diagnosed at 3 with high frequency loss. He wears 2 hearing aids and uses a radio aid at school. Unfortunately he continued to loose hearing and now has a profound loss. He is in mainstream primary preparing to transfer to secondary, What would you like to know?

Hi, my DS is moderately deaf, which I think is worse at high frequencies judging by his audiogram. No one talks about him having a high frequency loss, just being moderately deaf.
He has been wearing hearing aids since he was 6 months old. He gets on really well with them.
Who will you be referred to, and who will refer you?
