Feeding/Sleep:a new idea to me, anyone have ideas about...?

A friend's HV recently told her to go as long as possible between daytime feeds for her 4.5 month-old as this "gets them used to" longer gaps between feeds at night.

I've been working on the "load 'em up through the day" principle and thought HV advice sounded daft. But DH thinks it sounds reasonable.

Any tried and tested opinions...?

i think it sounds madness! fill them up in the day so they need less calories ar night, 4.5mths is young not to need night feeds anyway only one of my 5 wasnt feeding at night at that age, but he was still having a dream feed actually, at say 11pm and would then go through till 6am, my others all fed in the night for MUCH longer!

ooooh - that might work ......... for at least a week or two until they hit the 6 month growth spurt! My previously 4-5 hour sleeper suddenly started waking every hour - luckily I knew to expect it and we got through it.

Seriously, the HV isn't talking much sense at all.

Sounds like a load of guff to me. Babies need a set number of calories in a 24 hour period so surely is better to get as many in as early as you can?

Dd1 used to feed most of the afternoon. She then slept 12-14 hours at night.

i always made sure he ate plenty during the day, sorry i think that advice is crap. i went completely the OTHER way and tried to settle him with a dummy if he woke during the night, let him cry a bit,; by 8 weeks he was having a dream feed at 11 and sleeping through til 7, by 4 months he slept through. at 6 months he sometimes wakes and faffes about a bit at 5am, but he knows its not breakfast time. i very much believe that you condition a baby to behave in a way that you see fit, the sooner that they learn that their feeding needs to be done during the day, and sleeping at night, the better. letting him cry whilst all the other mothers were pansy-ing around with 3 feeds a night, was the best decision we made, and we have a healthy, happy, well adjusted child that doesnt rule the roost. HVs talk some nonsense....
