Shape sorters & wooden puzzles - what age?

Interested to know what age your DC were able to do the shape sorters and wooden jigsaw shape puzzles at? DD (13mo) has had them for ages but as yet they're wasted on her. I just don't think she has the attention span! By doing the puzzles I mean actually putting the right shape in the right hole - not just playing randomly with them.

What kind of puzzles are they? My 11.5 mo DD can do a lift out puzzle which is just circles into circles. The other ones she just tries a couple of times and then gets frustrated. She can do this simple shape sorter if I point which hole she has to the shape into. We don't have a wooden one but I imagine they would be beyond her at the moment.

Not all my friends babies are into these sort of toys though? Does she prefer to crawl/walk around rather than sit and play?

Hopefully someone with a slightly older baby will come along soon.

DD (18mo) is just starting to get a hang of these. She'll play with the shape sorter with help but gets frustrated if she tries on her own, unless it's the circle which she can do unassisted. She really likes wooden puzzles but can only take the shapes out not get them back in, though she has a good go at it. I'm assuming she's in the normal range with this - probably some babies take to them earlier. HTH Smile

dd was 11 months when she started doing them, but then again she has always enjoyed playing with little fiddly things.

DS is 2.1 and has just got the hang of these!

He has always been good at knowing where the pieces/shapes go, but lacked the dexterity (and more importantly the patience!) to complete them.

Lots of his little friends are now doing 8-12 piece floor puzzles easily - DS just looks at me like I'm mad if I try to get him involved!

DS got shape sorters at about 14 months. Wooden puzzles still get ignored now at 18 months. I think its a lot to do with their own interests. My son would much rather push a car through tunnels and round chairs around than sit down and fiddle with shapes.

Thanks all, yep, that makes sense - she was an early walker (10 months) and by now she's tearing around and climbing all over the furniture so I can't really see her having the patience to sit down with puzzles for a while yet. Luckily she loves books, so it's not all acrobatics.

DD 17 months plays with the shape sorter and her puzzles but still struggles to put them in herself. I think she knows in theory what to do, but can't do it herself (except for the circle shape in the shape sorter).

DS 18 months has been able to do a puzzle for about 2 months - he can put it in the right hole, but not necessarily fit it perfectly in.

The shape sorter he can do if he tries, but most of the time it leaves him in a fog of fury at his inability to do it immediately.

He's also more of a "get up and run" than a "sit and play" boy too.
