What can you do for a frustrated baby who can't crawl yet?

Dd on the verge of crawling she spends her days on all fours furiously rocking back and forth and screaming as she's so annoyed. I have tried putting toys in front (or my phone) for her to aim for and she can't quite get there yet. She can go backwards a bit but just WON'T STOP CRYING ABOUT IT. If I try and move her to a different position for a break or sit in bumbo or anything she really kicks off.
Trying to be patient with her but we've had a week of non stop crying now.

lol at the phone, that is exactly the thing that finally propelled my dd forwards, to get my mobile! it is an awful stage, i sympathise! we did end up getting down on the floor, one parent in front and one behind and physically moving arm/legs int he crawling motion to help but i am not sure it made any difference, they get there when they get there and then you wish they had never learnt to move!

it is awful as i say, distraction and playing with her on the floor etc are your best bet, she will get there and that frustration will motivate her, as awful as it is xx

Yes I moved DS's legs along as well, luckily he found it funny so it broke the day up a bit from all the whinging.

diyqueen · 13/03/2012 16:59

Ohhh yes, I remember that! It sounds like she's nearly there so the whinging won't go on too much longer... I took dd out lots at that stage, anything to distract her.

Yep, mine too. She was damned if she was going to give up and just rocked and moaned for hours! That was at 8 months. After two weeks she learned to push herself backwards on slippery floors. Then at 9 months on the dot she crawled forwards properly. It felt like forever but was actually only a couple of weeks between each stage. We tried moving her legs etc but no idea if it helped. Also tried giving herself something to push against with her legs but that didn't help much because I think they do need to go backwards first. Try the slippery floor thing and a romper with feet or tights to remove friction from the back end?

But your LO is nearly there, won't be long. It's damn frustrating but she's on the brink of working it out. And then you just can't childproof fast enough!

When my ds got to that stage I spent one afternoon showing him how to do it, demonstrating myself then moving his legs and arms. It sounds mad, but he crawled that day once I had physically shown him. Give it a try

She is already at the going backwards stage been doing that a little while just can't figure out forwards instead she now gets right up and straightens her legs bum up in the air for a bit then falls flat again. It is so so cute but I do feel sorry for her as she strains she tries so hard. She's nearly 7 months now and desperate to move about. I thought she may skip crawling altogether as she is already walking along furniture to support herself but still can't quite sit up unaided. She clearly likes to do everything in a strange order Hmm

Ah she is so small still, nothing you can do really to encourage, as it is all about muscle development and coordination. She really will get there in her own time.
My ds didn't crawl til almost 11 months and it was hard when he was frustrated, prior to that he got around by rolling/swimming across the carpet

Also, count your blessings that if you leave the room she will still be the same place and out of harms way when you return.my ds is now 15mo and somehow navigated the bendy stair gate and was halfway up before I realised today.
