My 20 month old doesn't talk

Hi I am quite new to mumsnet so hope I have posted this in the right place sorry if it's quite long. I have a beautiful dd who is 20 months old. At about 10 months she used to say all the typical words (mama, dada etc). She stopped after a while and now mainly babbles with the odd coherent word. She doesn't point to objects or tell me what she wants, she gets upset at certain sounds or sudden noises. I am very worried she is behind in her development and as she is my first child I don't know what to do. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hi there, my son is 19 months old and doesn't say much either, can say mama, dada, ta, yeh, but that is mainly it, i'm not overly worried at the moment, children develop at there own pace and some take longer than others. If you are worried, perhaps you could talk to your health visitor, she can help and put your mind at rest.
Hope i have helped a little.

You could be describing my ds2 OP. He was just as you describe.
I did have slight concerns about it all - the lack of speech, the not pointing, the upset over loud or sudden noises....

He is 4.3 now and has caught up with his peers quite the thing.

See your health visitor if you are worried, as that is what they are there for, and they will be happy to help.

Thank you for your replies I will go and see the hv in the clinic. I have always been quite an anxious person and my dh cousin was recently diagnosed with autism so it makes me more anxious about my dd and her development.

I'd recommend the book "It Takes Two to Talk" - search for it on mumsnet and you will see many recommendations.

One of its biggest attractions is that it isn't scary, so it won't increase you anxiety, just channel it in productive ways.

good luck with the HV - do make sure you get a hearing test even if you are sure she can hear.
