What words can your 19-21 month old say?

mszebra · 31/01/2006 13:22

ds is 19.5 months old. He says

"Bye" very clearly
"woof!" for dogs, "'erow" for cats
"'nana", "hot", "ish" (for shoes, sox)
does hand signs for helicopter & airplane
something like 'all gone', something like 'more'

I think that's it. What do other 19-21m olds say?

dd1 at 21 months: "Daddy's havin a holiday. He's in a rock hole (Morocco!) with Simon".

dd2 at 21 months: 'Bye'; 'Ada' (version of ds's name); 'meemeemeemeemeemee' (all-purpose request).

Moral: Don't compare. That way madness lies. As long as child is pointing and communicating, all is almost certainly fine.

My dd at 19 months was holding complete conversations with long and fully formed sentences. Her friend a month older had about 6 words, which was a real worry to her mother. They're both coming up for 5 now and are both equally verbal, and have similar vocabularies.

I agree with frog; don't compare, because it will drive you insane. They're all different and they all get there in the end.

mythumbelinas · 31/01/2006 13:32

my dd at 20m could count 1-8
hi, hello, bye bye, juice, pasta, yes, no, ok, mine, yours, fifi, dora, boots and sing a bit
i'm sure there are other words .. she is such a chatterbox and can repeat quite accurately

now she's 2 can count 1-13
she recognises some shapes too like heart, square and rectangle and a few colours, green, blue, orange

faeriemum · 31/01/2006 13:34

my ds 21 months says quite alot of 'easy' words....

clock - 'cluk'
dog - 'doggie'
car - car very clearly
there it is - 'dhere tis'
bye - 'buh bye'
baby - 'baybee'
door - door very clearly
fire engine - 'dee door'
cake - 'cack' (lmao)
oh dear - do dear
banana - narna
tea - 'dubba dee'
....mind has gone blank but he says about 40 diff words

he's able to identify face parts and body parts and foods/objects when asked too.

mszebra · 31/01/2006 13:34

mmm... am not really "worried", am just curious WHEN ds will start saying more. Am a bit bored with his limited repertoire

yeah, agree all kids are different.
dd1 couldn't say much more than yes and no .. didn't speak much at all, so was very surprised dd2 can order us about and say 'i go out, come on then!'

dejags · 31/01/2006 13:41

DS1 - can't remember (how terrible is that .

DS2 (17 months):

Bye-bye
Hi
Woof (imitation of the sound)
Juice
Dudu (dummy)
Vroom-vroom (imitation of the sound)
Baba (baby)
Mama
Dada

Similar to WWB DD1 was scarily fluent at 18 months - honestly complex sentences grammatically correct, huge vocabularly.

DD2 (now 19 month ish) is just starting 2 or 3 word combinations for example, all done or where is baby/jacket/frog etc.

BUT DD1 (whilst walking at 12 months) was the most physically useless toddler ever. No climbing, jumping, running anything really she was just rubbish. She wouldn't walk the length of herself. DD2 climbs/runs/bounces/hops everywhere. She probably walked about 2 miles at the weekend around the Pentlands.

They are all different.....and wouldn't it be boring if they weren't.

lunavix · 31/01/2006 13:59

ds who is two in april can say mummy (although most people are mummy!) daddy, doggy, holly dog (name of pils dog) can sort of count to four but gets very confused, just knows the numbers really, juice, toast, poo, stinkey, bed, cot, bath, jack (his favourite toy) buggy, woof, tweenies, shoes, socks, all his face parts and one or two body parts, ... he can also say 'i love you ... (insert name)' but tends to do that rarely for effect!

I'm sure there's more! It's all come on quite suddenly, and he's been quite late in a lot of things.

Bozza · 31/01/2006 14:36

DD is 20 months - has loads of single words but not putting them together yet.

She can say:
mummy
daddy
yes
no
hello
bye
DS
la la
Po
cat
sock
shoe
trousers
cardie
hair
clip
yoghurt
pear
banana
chocolate
apple
sandwich
cheese
biscuit
teddy
bear
all gone
more
no more
mine
knee
toilet
teeth
toothbrush
puzzle
book
Jane
Annette
Ruby
Grace
Freya
Charlene
Megan
Charlotte
Joshua
Helen
baby
swimming
breakfast
chair
nappy
mat
juice
milk
drink
spoon
fork
stink
poo
wee

And I'm sure there are more that I cannot think of.

I have finally tracked down some of you June 04 lot - well I knew you couldn't hide from me forever! Ds's speech took a very sudden upward track about 2 months ago and now he is forming full sentences, 'reading' some books and can 'sing' (in the loosest sense) some songs like Twinkle Twinkle....He is a complete parrot and whatever anyone says, he has to repeat. (Note to self, must tone down the swearing again....).

DebsCee · 31/01/2006 14:51

My DS 18 months can say: Mum, Daddy, hot, cat, car, all gone, I don't know, Oh god, Oh dear, up there, in there, out there, Jack, Nanna, 1,2,3, tractor, jumper, duck, moo, quack quack, mieouw, yes, no, hat, head, nose, more, cup and I think that's it. It is only really in the last 3 weeks that he has started to talk more.

Really shouldn't compare because he has 2 friends the same age, one talks in sentences, the other says 2 words. Depending on how I feel he's either advanced or behind - this comparing lark only causes brain ache!

colditz · 31/01/2006 14:59

My ds, at 19 months old, barely said a word.

tangerinecath · 31/01/2006 15:04

DD at 19 months has loads of single words, 50-60 at the last count. We have a few strings of two words and a couple of simple 3 word sentences "Where Daddy gone?"

She seems to be picking them up really quicky at the moment, a month ago she only had about 10 words and no sentences at all.
