Oh yes, mine slept in their cots until they were about 3.5, they loved them!

How can you keep them in a cot with the sides up at 4yrs old? Do you not need to take at least one side off when they're about 2yrs so they can get up and wee in the night? Or was it just mine who at that age couldn't get through the night without needing to wee?

None of mine have ever got up in the night to wee. Now 16, 14, & 5 and still don't.

lovingthecoast · 21/03/2012 14:16

No, well they didn't need to get up after the age of about 3 or 3.5 but definitely at 2yrs. Having said that, one of them wasn't dry at night until nearer 3.

Mine still in cot with sides up because she is happy and I have been putting off paying out for a bunk bed (which is what she will need to move into). She has never needed to have a wee in the night. (Goes off to ebay to look at bunk beds..)

dc6 still in a cot with sides up at 3.5 - he's dry at night and seems happy with the whole thing - it's a cotbed

Each to their own, but I find the idea of children (SN excepted)much past the age of 2, in a cot with sides up, odd. I don't know anyone with a 2.5-4 yr old, who is still in a cot.

My DTS's (now adults) went into their own small, low, single beds at 14 months. It was earlier than I envisaged, but the large cot which they shared became knackered, and my parents treated us to the beds. There were some issues initially, with one or both getting up once put down, but the return to bed was swift and repetitive, and they soon stopped the "game".

DD is 15 months and on the diddy side. I would imagine we will convert her cot bed into a bed around 20-24mths.

I really need some advice . My nearly 4 year old daughter still sleeps in her cot , but not sure when to turn it into a bed. Its realy difficult to swap her from a cot to a bed because my daughter is autistic, learning difficulties and little understanding as she is non verbal. Im realy worried about taking the sides off her cot because i actually sleep downstairs as i gave my room up so all 3 of my children can have their own bedroom so im panoncing as shes getting bigger . Will i hear her if im down stairs,if she wakes during the night . She cant talk so she couldnt even shout me. Any other parents of autisic children going through the same . Any advuce would be great thank you

Loulou you may get more help starting your own thread rather than adding on to a zombie thread as people with experience relevant to your circs will be more likely to click on it.

Is the cot a cotbed? If not maybe switch to one of those first (they can be picked up second hand fairly cheaply), then once used to it with the sides on you could take one side off then the other. Make the transition in stages? If you are concerned about her escaping the room and you not hearing her, then put an extra high stairgate on the bedroom door. I have very little experience with autism and non-verbal children (my nephew, but obviously my experience isn't first hand) I'm afraid, but I transitioned my DCs to beds relatively young when they only had a few words and limited understanding. Using a stairgate for containment and exciting new bedding (any favourite TV characters?) as an incentive worked well for us.
