Empathy in young children

My DS is 18 months and I was just wondering if any of you knew, and could tell me, about empathy in children his age?

I know it's silly, but whenever I yawn so does he, and I heard somewhere that only humans do that because it relates to empathy. So is this the start of it? Like all little boys his age, he has the tendency to push the boundary, but when I make it clear this is naughty and he's upset me, he becomes very loving; kissing me and stroking my hair etc.

I think I'm on the lookout for it because he was (and to some extent, still is), a very quiet baby whose thoughts are hard to crack, and who sometimes appears to have a mature agenda (honestly, he's like a little old man!) although I'm not sure how much of this is due to him being an only so not being round lots of other kids 24/7.

Well ds is an only and was NOT a quiet baby and makes his feelings very clear all day long. I think its just down to different personalities.

Hes is just 20 months and loves to try and imitate us eg trying to do up zips or pretending to snore - is it that kind of copying? Or actual you yawn, I feel tired yawning?
