advice needed: screaming and painful nappy changes:

ds (19m) is teething and has diarehhea, and now nappy rash which has gotten worse overnight.
changing him this morning was the worst it ever has been. he screamed anytime i touched him (i'm using warm water and cotton wool squares to clean him). putting on zinc oxide cream was horrible too

we've tried distracting him, which doesn't really work.

i'm waiting for the hv to call me back as i type this..

any advice/suggestions on how to make nappy changes less terrible? yesterday (with the diarehrea) i changed him 11+ times :*(

thanks ladies....

MY DS had this when he was about 18 months.... I cannot remember what we done, but someone hopefully will be along soon. All I can think of is using a bit of lavender oil in a bath

NannyL · 31/01/2006 10:11

assuming you've given him some calpol?

poor thing... sometimes they are SOOOO sore....

remember when my charge aged about 18 months had really bad nappy rash... it kept bleeding if you wiped it and he was walking around saying "ow ow" pointing at his nappy

luckily it was only REALLY bad for 1 day

hope yours gets better too

lunarx · 31/01/2006 10:12

i have given him calpol unfortunately he's now thrown it up along with breakfast

Oh, poor chap.

We really find Kielhs (sp?) nappy cream works really well, and soothes them right away, when you put it on.

Letting them have some naked time can help, but only if you have a warm, washable floor to do it on?

Some foods are really constipating, like egg, cheese, etc ...

Does he seem ok, otherwise?

NotQuiteCockney · 31/01/2006 10:17

Just saw, about the vomiting. Sounds like he has a tummy bug, not just teething. I'd talk to your HV, and consider using Dioralyte, but you may well have to just wait it out.

poppiesinaline · 31/01/2006 10:34

I dunno. I have heard some people say that their babes vomit with teething. Never experienced that myself mind you. Have you tried Drapolene. My friend recommended it, she works in an old people's nursing home and they use it on the old folk if they get sore. It is really good. It is very light and doesn't 'stick' to the skin and very easy to apply and very soothing. It also works well alongside disposable nappies, ie, doesn't block the way disposables work.

I feel for you. Horrible when they teeth. DS2 is teething atm - only had 4 1/2 hours sleep last night. I did try not to shout at him honest!

Things that have worked for us are

  1. Metanium oitment.
  2. Cleaning area with cotton wool and cold chammomile tea (no wipes).
  3. Oatmeal bath, (place some oats in an old (clean) pair of tights/popsock) and hang under the hot tap allowing the water to run through the oats, and then bathe baby in the bath.
biglips · 31/01/2006 10:39

i use cotton wool and lukewarm water for his sore bum! and give him a bath too as that will soothe his bum too

chicagomum · 31/01/2006 10:44

One other one I have heard of (but never tried) is putting a thin layer of egg white over the affected and allowing to dry to form a kind of protective barrier).

lunarx · 31/01/2006 10:48

i've spoke to the hv. (and been vomitted on, again). she's suggested no food/milk for 24 hours and just offer water hourly (i dread this at bedtime as milk is part of his bedtime routine) -
she's also suggested a cream called drapoline? (its a pinkish colour) (dh is going to try and get us some at lunchtime and bring it home)
and for changing him, just to soak his bottom in a bowl of warm water and pat him dry.
and no pain medicine as that can upset the stomach as well.
she did say that the teething and being sick/diarehrea aren't associated. (i thought the teething was causing it )
luckily our kitchen floor is big and linoleum so some naked time will be in order this afternoon (just will have the kitchen towels handy!)

Arrr, poor him. Yes, Drapolene is what I mentioned earlier. Very good stuff.

lunarx · 31/01/2006 10:58

i'm hoping dh can find it easily. the nearest chemist to us has none in stock

lunarx - sympathies - I've started a thread this morning about DS3's extreme nappy rash! Hope that you get it sorted soon.

Drapolene is good, although I haven't got any at the moment - I think it can be quite hard to find.

lunarx · 31/01/2006 11:10

thanks dinosaur...
over last summer, when ds has terrible nappy rash (open sores and bleeding) the gp gave him some steroid cream, which worked very good after a day i hope your ds feels better soon too!

Just a thought about Drapolene - check you don't have a little tube tucked away in a baby drawer. I got some in my Bounty pack.

Highlander · 01/02/2006 08:44

Drapolene - reduces inflammation in a couple of hours. If I know DS is teething, I put it on after his daily poop to combat the rash before it appears IYSWIM

kamilosan is good as well if you can't get drapoline. It has chamomile in which promotes healing. Is usually found by the babyfeeding stuff as it is usually used for cracked nipples but works wonders on poorly bottoms as well.

lunarx · 01/02/2006 12:11

dh was able to get us some drapolene yesterday at lunch time. it was a lot easier to put on than anything else we've used.
he did fine not being fed yesterday..i dont think he would have ate anyway. and he went down at bedtime without milk after 45minutes of cuddles and sitting by his cot. he slept til 4am, and then was only up til 5am, woke at 8 this morning..

bottom is much better, rash is going away nicely.
he's had some food this morning and no vomitting. and still is drinking plenty of water.
and had a nice nap this morning laying on my chest on the couch....

(thanks ladies.)
