I need help with discipline! Let's just say DS has always been 'spirited' but lately he has been throwing big tantrums if he doesn't get what he wants immediately and when he gets really angry he has started to hit me or his toys.

I think maybe i have given in to his whinges a bit too easily in the past but am determined to set things straight. Should i say 'NO' and then just ignore him when he gets like this?! I think he is too young for the naughty step, plus he never sits still at all, ever!

Try it and see if it works. What's his talking like, mine all calmed down once they could talk and when they realised that life is much nicer when they co-operate.

My ds is one and has been doing this for a while, usually if I tell him no. I've tried saying "no" quite firmly and moving his hands away and then try to distract him with a toy or whatever. He usually does it when he's tired.

I wouldn't try the naughty step. With dd I say 'we don't hit we stroke' then stroke her or stroke me with her hand, it's really helped she strokes my head all the time Hmm Grin

18 months is still very young

I do the same as spotty, when Baby Goo lifts her hand I say 'kind hands' and she strokes my hair.

If she hits me in temper then i just put her down, saying No in a firm voice. She doesn't like that.

It might seem counter intuitive, but ignoring and walking away seems to calm a situation down. It depends on your dc but the stronger they see your reaction is, the more they might do it, if it's for attention that is.
