Toddler Weight

DS3 is 2.6, I last weighed him in May last year at 14.1kg (I think he was around the 90th centile at the time), my reason for weighing him was that he had had several episodes of diarrhoea and I was concerned. As it turns out he seemed to improve with only occasional bouts and I didn't weigh him again.

So to get to today, he has been ill on and off for 6 weeks with chest, ear and throat infections and his appetite is also non-existent (refused chocolate a few days ago) - I decided to weigh him (same scales, first thing in the morning as before) and he now weighs 14kg - Is this normal, surely there should have been some gain in almost a year. He has dropped to around the 50th centile and his growth also seems to have slowed down (75th to 50th centile).

We are due to go to the doctors next week to check his chest - Is it worth mentioning or will he think I'm quite mad for even realising?

not sure what kg are but my grandson was weighed last week and is 28lb,he is 14 moths, but he is tall for his age.

ThatsEnough · 03/03/2012 21:23

Lilmamma that would make him around 12.7kg, which is just a kg or so less than my 30 month old - Who used to be tall for his age.

My DD is 2.6 and weighs just over 14kg but then she has always been on the 25th centile.

If he looks healthy and has plenty of energy then there probably isn't anything to worry about but if you are concerned it's worth mentioning even just to put your mind at rest.

DC don't tend to grow steadily so they won't seem to change much then they suddenly shoot up. Plus they tend to grow more in the summer months, maybe they use more calories in the winter to keep warm? You might find in a few months he is noticably different.

LotsOfGoodFunThatIsFunny · 03/03/2012 21:33

DD isn't 2.6 at all she is 3.6 Blush

So it's not just me that can't remember ages then! I'm not too worried, seems full of energy at home, but wants to be carried the minute we set foot outside the door at the moment. It's just the zero weight gain in 10 months that I find a bit odd. (I suppose he could have gained weight and then lost it without me knowing though).

I'll re-weigh in a month or so and see what the difference is - I think!

14kg sounds like loads to me! My 2.4 yo nephew weighs 14 kg and I can barely lift him. DD3 is 2.6 and weighs 10.7 kg (23lbs).

Having said that, it entirely depends on how tall your DS is, and on his build. Does he seem particularly thin? Can you see ribs and vertebrae along his backbone? Does he seem a little hollower-cheeked than you'd expect for a toddler? Of course he will have lost weight due to the illness and not eating, but there is a difference between losing weight at such times (which is why most babies and toddlers carry a little bit of spare anyway) and being dangerously thin. Only your and your doctor can judge whether he's lost too much weight.

YankNCock · 03/03/2012 21:44

My DS is 2.6 and weighs 13.6kg, which is 50th centile. He's also on 50th centile for height. Have just looked at his red book, he was 12.5kg at 23 months and 11kg at 17 months.

Agree that they definitely don't grow steadily. I haven't actually written down his weight that many times, but he likes to get on the scale when I do, and it seems like he gained that last 1.1kg all of a sudden and then has been 13.6kg for ages!

pigleychez · 03/03/2012 22:25

My DD1 is 3.6 and weighs 13.6 kg.
DD2 is 22mths and weighs 12.7 kgs.
Both eat like horses so should be soo much more!

I remember questioning this with the HV before when DD1 just didn't put weight on for quite a while. They have periods of actual physical growth then periods of brain growth.
He may well of put a little weight on but then lost it again through illness. Id say not to worry too much. It doesn't hurt to ask if its bothering you. I think they will say no to worry unless he is actually losing weight consistently.

ThatsEnough · 03/03/2012 22:50

Thanks everyone, I think that rather than look neurotic I will just monitor at home for while and see how he is.

In answer to questions above, I can see ribs and spine, but he doesn't look overly thin and still has a bit of a toddler tum. It's quite possible that he has put weight on and then lost it - I would know more if I could find his red book as he was weighed at his 2 year check last October.

I don't think the doctor will think you are mad, because we are so used to babies continually putting on weight in their first year, that it comes as a bit of a shock when this slows down or stops. However I don't think you have anything to worry about as DS put on absolutely no weight between 12 and 24 months. What would be worrying is if they didn't get any taller. Even more worrying would be if he could still fit into the same shoes.

Woodlands · 04/03/2012 20:12

My DS is a little younger (19 months) but has only put on 200g since October, and the first shoes we got him then still fit fine too. He used to be 75th-91st centile for both weight and height but is now around the 50th for both (11.75kg, 82cm). I'm guessing he'll have a growth spurt some time - interesting to hear they tend to grow more in the summer, and his body has been so busy all winter fighting off bug after bug that it's no wonder he hasn't grown.

LilyBolero · 04/03/2012 20:20

Weight gain definitely slows down; not sure what the weights are in kilos, but ds1 is nearly 11, he weighs 4stone 7lbs, ds2 is 5 and weighs 2stone 13, ds3 is 21 months, weighs 27 lbs.

So you can see how the weight gain isn't constant at all ages. Dd is heavier than all of them, she is 8, but still slim, just she is very tall.
