Is there a 12 month check up and do I have to book it myself? <confused>

I haven't seen a home visitor since my DD was about four weeks old, with the exception of a phone call when she was three months to check I didn't have PND Hmm

This is fine, as I haven't really had much of a need to see one, but she's going to be one year old this week and I feel like she should probably have some kind of 12 month check up, shouldn't she? No one's been in touch about it, though, so do I have to book it myself? And who is it with, the GP? I'm a bit confused.

Also, she'll need her 13 month jabs soon too, but I assume those are done at the GPs, aren't they? Or are they?

TIA

She should have had a check up around 7 to 9 months. My HV contacted me to arrange a home visit for this.

Jabs should be done by nurse at GP surgery at 8, 12 and 16 weeks and then at 13 months. We were sent a reminder by the PCT for all of these and I booked the appointment at the surgery. For the 13 month jabs, I left it a little because DD wasn't well, and the nurse called me to check I hadn't forgotten.

I'm a little bit Shock that the HV hasn't been in touch but I guess if you didn't want baby weighed and all is ok, then it's not such a big deal.

Different areas have checks at different times these days as far as I can tell. It is probably worth phoning your HV to find out when yours are - I didn't get the 18month ones for DS2 as she thought we had moved (in fairness my house was on the market). When we did eventually move the new area had a 2.5yr check, he didn't get that as he should have had an 18month check in our old area and therefore it wasn't deemed necessary...

Don't you visit a local clinic? I used to get my DD weighed regularly & check on her general progress, then stay & play & chat with friends. I stopped going regularly when she was 12mo.

However, it is true that different areas have different procedures. I didn't get any reminders about immunisations, other than the general bits in the red book & green advice guide.

My DD did get a 1yr check, at 14mo as it happened, & the HV did phone to book it. That was the first time the HV had been to my home since DD was 2wo. She said at the time that 2yr checks were coming back & they would scrap the 1yr check, as they wanted to check whether children were developing speech problems earlier than at the 3yr check. My friends in the area, whose DC are a bit older, have all had both 1yr & 2yr checks.

You should have contact details for your HV in the red book, so you can phone & check what its like in your area. If there isn't a proper 1yr check, maybe you could take your DD to a clinic & have her weight & height checked & have an informal chat, just so they know your 'face' as it were?

when dd (8) was a baby we had 6-8 week, 8 month (incl. hearing test) and 2 year checks.

ds (5) had an 8 week check, there was no 8 month one any longer (did a newborn hearing test instead). The 2 year check consisted of a phone call from the hv to see if I had any issues! He was not seen until his pre-school jabs, at which point he was also weighed and measured. I did self refer him for speech therapy around the age of 3.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I don't go to a local clinic because I haven't needed to since she was about 4 weeks old. I stopped weighing her very early on because she was putting on weight and making progress really well.

I have found a phone number for the HV base so will ring on Monday and see what they say, though it looks the jabs are much more important as I'm not expecting a 1 year check to really reveal anything, as she's making pretty textbook progress.

we had immunisation appointments sent out automatically so never had to book them ourselves. What happened with the baby jags?

I think it depends where you live. On the post-natal group section on here I mentioned DD's 10-12 month HV check, and other people in the group were asking what it was and how I got it. I was told about it when the HV first came to the house when DD was a few weeks old, then sent an appointment in the post a few weeks ago. I think different areas have different screening schedules. There was also information about it in my red book so you could try looking there or contact the HVs to ask. When I went to DD's check last week the HV said that at her age she should still be weighed every couple of months. I hadn't taken her for 4months, but I ignored this as I can see that she is growing well and am not worried and it is a pain to get to the clinic.
I think immunisation appointments are sent in the post or at least letters to tell you they are due and remind you to make an appointment to get them done.

The only check we get here is 6 weeks (with GP). Other than that HV just checks at imms if all ok (not a formal check - she's just asked whether I have any concerns). You'll get a reminder for immunisations.

ZeroMinusZero · 05/03/2012 20:42

Rang up today and it turns out there is no 12 month check here, just a two year and a four year. But if you have a concern you can go down to the clinic whenever you like. So I'll just book the jabs at the GPs and leave it there, as I don't really have a concern.

I've never understood why different areas have different rules. If having a 1 year check up is so great according to one area, why doesn't the other area think it's so great?
