10 month old DC waking up inconsolable in the night

As the title says. He wakes up with small cries that quickly turn into inconsolable crying (despite me patting him or picking him up immediately - cot is right next to the bed). We thought (think) it's teething, but Calpol has little effect, neither has carrying or rocking. He will take milk (breastfed) if offered, but usually goes back to the wailing as soon as he comes off (unless he's fallen asleep on the boob, in which case he'll have fractious sleep until he wakes up again crying).

We usually put him in the bed with us when he's like this, which used to work, but now he just carries on crying. I want to do what's best for him, but I really don't understand what's going on for him and both DH and I are becoming more short-tempered due to sleep deprivation!

Is this normal? Any suggestions as to what it might be or what might work?

Ear infection / Ear ache is what immediately springs to mind. It is extremely painful.

Take them to the doctor to have a look. They might book in a test to look for glue ear etc.

Every night or random nights? Could be a nightmare in which case you can't do a lot except cuddle him and talk to him in the hope he realizes you're there. It's horrible though :(

How long has it been going on for?
