At what age do you let dc shower/bathe themselves?

DD is 7 and I shower her and DS(5) together in the evenings, I was wondering when should they start doing it themselves. It's starting to hit home that dd is getting older and she will need to start doing these things on her own.

And also if they shower in the evening should they be freshening up in the morning as well with flannel before dressing?

My eldest is five, she can not put the shower on but if I do that for her she showers herself dryes herself puts her pjs on and brushes her hair. I dry it for her. I do stay upstairs while she is in there and put washing away or something. No locked door.
But she does also like a play in the bath with her sister so she doesn't do it every night.

And no mine just get dressed in the morning.

I help ds (5) with rinsing his hair but dd (8) does the full thing herself.

I asked about the freshening up in the morning because MIL and I were discussing about letting dd bathe/shower herself now and then she said that kids should also be freshening their bodies in the morning with a flannel too before getting dressed as they can sweat.

They always shower in the evening before bed so I don't see the point to this and she said that is how she was brought up, she was brought up in Jamaica where the weather is obviously a lot hotter than here!

I think if they shower in the evening, then just hands, face and teeth in the morning :) mine were about 8 when they did it themselves,i ran the bath and they got in and out and dried themselves, and washed hair if needed help.

DS1 is 8 and showers himself, with lots of me shouting at him to get out. Grin

I don't think she really needs to freshen up in the morning unless she has hit puberty.

liveinazoo · 03/03/2012 19:08

hands and faces in the morning.dd turns on and showers herself.
ds does self under supervision or just stands there gets wet and gets out
dd3washes all but back in the bath as she a feisty little madam!
i wash all hair as they all have long hair

I still turn the shower on for ds, who's 11, because the hot water comes out scalding hot and it's very fiddly to adjust. But he has been showering himself apart from that since he was about 6. Dd likes needs help rinsing her hair if she's coloured or hennaed it.

But we don't lock bathroom doors anyway and on and out qnd sit on the edge of the bath and chat so there wasn't a moment when they started showering themselves- it went from me doing it all to me doing a bit to me sitting and chatting over a period of time.

I think mine started going in the shower from about 8 or 9 on their own. long time ago.

My sister still remembers my mum Showering her when she was 7 and she hated it. She couldn't really let go as she was the youngest. I can't imagine still showering my boys. Youngest is 4 & is so independent. Showers, moisturises& dresses himself. Obviously I check but I personally think 8 or 7 is too old to be washing them. Alot of people may think 4 is too young but he does a perfect job himself.

Lilyloo · 03/03/2012 20:04

My 9 and 7 year old shower themselves i bath 4 year old , will also wash 7 year olds hair if she gets in bath with dd2 but she does it herself in the shower.

pointythings · 03/03/2012 21:30

Mine have been showering independently since they were 6 and 8, they stopped sharing a bath on weekends (both girls) about 6 months ago because they were too big for the bath so now alternate bath/shower on weekends.

They only want me to help when they are run down and tired, a request for help washing hair tells me they have a virus coming!

alemci · 03/03/2012 21:45

I may have ran a bath for mine and left them to it. I never washed them after about 5 I shouldn't think.
