DD2 just gone 21 months seems behind in her speech. I've taken her to the HV who didn't seem to think there was cause to worry. She can say mama, daddy, meow, pwooor (for feet/socks) ball, book (recently), this (infrequently), she has said other words but not often. Most of the day she will point, grunt and mmmmm at things. She doesn't say her sisters name. But she seems to understand things that I ask her eg DD go and get the remote Grin pass this/that.

She wasnt breathing when she was born and it took a while to bring her round, I get anxious that this is related, could it be? She's fine otherwise.

HV said there was no point at this stage referring to speech therapy and to wait to see if things were better by about 2.4months.

Reassurance, advice, where to go from here appreciated TIA

At 21 months my son said even less than yours does now.

Now at 2 years 8 months you can't shut him up. He really started to speak around 24 months.

Really, she's too young for you to worry about this. Enjoy the quiet. Grin

I took my 2.5 yr old to speech therapy, he said less than yourr dd - I was worried about nothing, now he is 5 and has a huge vocab and literally never stops talking!!! I think 2 is too young to think about speech, I would wait until about 3 to worry....(like my second son, but that's a different story!!)

I only have DD1 to compare her to and she had a huge amount of words by this age (well in my head she did lol) she gets frustrated though because I don't know what she wants and that results in amazing tantrums and head butting the floor.

DD really didn't talk much at that age. She is now 2.6 and talks all the time in looong sentances! It came on very quickly. We were concerned because she had a lot of ear infections when she was around 15-20 months. Our health visitor referred her to audiology for hearing checks and to a group speech and language class, as well as giving us some info on how to encourage speech. Her feeling (and ours) was that it was better to start looking into these things now because in our area SALT referrals could take a long time and it was better to be in the system, rather than only getting things started when she was 2.6-3 and then having to wait months to see anyone, by which time she could have fallen quite a bit behind. This depends on your area though- yours might be better off for SALT than ours.

However, as I said, she seems to be one of those children who waits and then goes from nothing to everything very quickly. Hopefully your DD will be the same.
