mini micro scooter for 2 year old

DD is about to turn 2. She has very good motor and coordination skills and is very tall for her age (99+ centile). I have been thinking about getting her a mini micro scooter for her upcoming birthday. She has seen other children in the park with them and is VERY interested in them. She has been walking since about 11 months, is competent at running, jumping and climbing and has very good balance (and regularily scares the shit out of me by demonstrating said abilities by walking along the back of the sofa etc etc) .

We are expecting DD2 in May and i was thinking that DD1 having a scooter would be a good way for us all to get out into the park when i am on maternity leave and give her a reason not to be jealous of DD2 in the buggy. She is quite protective of "her" buggy and hates other children to be in it. They scooters seem small and light enough that i can sling it under the buggy if she gets tired of it.

DH however thinks she is too little for it, she would hurt herself and we should wait until she is 3 (the recommended age on the marketing). Given they are £50+ i dont want to get one and have it languish in the cupboard until she is able to manage it.

I wondered at what age people usually get these kind of scooters for their toddlers. I appreciate that the 2 wheel scooters require more balancing ability than she has but i thought she would be ok with a 3 wheeler. thoughts?

I'd say go for it, my youngest was a whizz on hers by the time she was 2.5. Unless it's really quiet where you are though, I probably wouldn't use it to get to the park just yet (stopping seems to be the part that they learn last!)

CountessOlenska · 01/03/2012 10:28

Go for it, best toy ever bought. Got for second birthday, v tall child, still going strong on it at 3.8

Fishlegs · 01/03/2012 10:30

We got ds1 one of these when he was 2, he did ok with it and by the time he was 2.5 he was quizzing along confidently. Ds2 was always interested in it, and learnt to ride it around the house before he was 2, and hasn't looked back.

IMO, they can't do too much damage to themselves until they've properly learned to scoot, which would take a bit of time. More importantly, I'd have a good think about where you're going to be using it - do you have any roads to cross en route to the park? Ds2 is now 3, and it's only recently that he's developed any sort of road sense, so he had to go in the pushchair to the park, and then set free to scoot.

consider getting one of these scoot and pull things. yes i know it's basically a dog's lead and looks like it would be no use at all, but it's a small work of genius. i pull dd back from nursery every day, it really helps them to steer on it oddly enough, and the sheer relief of being able to hang it on your back when all else fails is worth a fortune.

btw would also advise trying the more expensive scooter for older kids too, if you think you'll get use out of it for many years. same height, pretty much, if the handle is down lowest.

bigbadbarry · 01/03/2012 10:39

You can get a seat for it now - I've got my 2 year old one. So it is a (fast!) Ride on until they are big enough to scoot

puffylovett · 01/03/2012 10:50

Both my boys have been scooting since before 2. Ds2 (2.4) has graduated from his mini micro on to a 2 wheeler (he wants to do stunts like his older brother [rolleye])

lynlynnicebutdim · 01/03/2012 10:55

Thanks all! Will show DH this thread so he can see i am not crazy.

We would actually have to drive to the park i have in mind but once there there is loads of tarmaced pathes that she could scoot on.

In that case definitely go for it - most used toy in our house by far!

PatriciaHolm · 01/03/2012 11:47

I know plenty of two years olds who have these and manage fine - see them on the school run! I think DD/DS were about 2.5, but your DD sounds as if she should be able to cope.

Kveta · 01/03/2012 11:49

we got DS a cheaper scooter for his 2nd birthday and it is crap, wish we'd got the mini micro - he has friends with them, and is always nabbing the scooters and zipping about the place on them. His own scooter is a cheapo Thomas the Tank Engine one, and he can't quite work out how to scoot on it. So I'd go for the pricier one myself!

Pooka · 01/03/2012 11:49

DS2 has been bombing around on ds1's old one since he was 18 months. Is very very good at it now (at 2 and a half) though he's now more interested in the balance bike he got at Christmas. Can balance, turn and everything. He's actually pretty slight for his age too.

Do get her a helmet though - just in case.

The micro scooters are FANTASTIC!

MrsJonJon · 01/03/2012 11:54

We got our twins scooters for Xmas - they were 18 months old at the time (now 20 months). They got the hang of them within a week, using them indoors up and down the wooden hallway, and in the garden. My daughter isn't quite 9th centile, and my son around 25th.

We got Ozbozz My First Scooter - starts with 4 wheels, then you can take them down to 3, and then 2.

OK, so we aren't going really fast just yet, but they know how to use them, and we are just building their confidence slowly. We have taken them to the park once and they were great on them.

Go for it - your daughter will love it!

randomimposter · 01/03/2012 14:56

DS got his for 2nd birthday. They aren't cheap, but £ per use it is BY FAR the best thing we've bought. Uses it every day, he is now 3y9m, and we have just bought a replacement (added up the parts bill and decided to splurge). Mini micro are very stable and easy to ride, and therefore much safer IMHO than cheaper ones.

Only downside was that DS soon refused to leave the house without it, and so from about 2y4m the buggy was never used again...

TheSinglePringle · 01/03/2012 15:00

My son is 2 and has a scooter. Was only £20 too and he loves it. It's a my firat scooter one and it as 4 wheels which can be taken off to leave it with 3 and then 2 as he gets older.

Notanexcitingname · 01/03/2012 16:29

Go for it. DS2 was competant on his by 2 years and one week, by 2.2 I was wearing trainers and joggers on the school run as I was running all the way behind him.

But get a helmet. DS2 ended up in casualty at 2.3, as I had thought I was close enough to catch him should he fall. I wasn't. (He was fine)

ipanicked · 01/03/2012 21:30

We got a mini micro one for DS for his 2nd birthday and he was fine with it in a couple of weeks so I say go for it. My mate pulls her 18m old around on one cos he is so desperate to be like his big sister Grin

shebird · 03/03/2012 21:38

Best thing ever couldn't live without it. DD got hers when she was 2 and got the hang of it in a week. Really good for getting through the don't want to be in the buggy all the time but can't walk too far stage.

4madboys · 03/03/2012 21:49

another thumbs up here, ds4 has one, ds3 had one and now ds2 and ds3 have the bigger sized version they do, they are brilliant, its how we got ds4 out of the double pushchair, he uses it everyday and they do go at immense speed once they get the hang of them!
