When to ditch the dummy

My five-month-old has a dummy to fall asleep with. She was a very sucky baby and before we realised we had a dummy habit. She's still sleeping in our room but at night if she wakes without it, we have to pop it back in. She's going to nursery in March and I wonder whether I should try to break the habit before then, or to let her continue with it. If I do, is she still going to have it when she's at school. Any advice?

my ds had a dummy he had 3 of them and he loved them but when we transfered him to a bed we told him the birdys had to have his dummies and we threw them away (kept them really just incase) but he was happy about giving them to the birdies he was 2.8 at the time and he did ask about them occasionally but we just mentioned the birdy's it was quite easy (but good luck)

also there are several children in my dd nursey all over 2 who still have dummies they are not allowed them in nursery but are waiting for them after the activities keep them occupied

also some mothers still give their children dummies down the school at 3.5 but in the house

so i think once in nursery the activities will help keep her busy and mind off the dummy

I think current advice states that it is best to be rid of the dummy before 1yr because of speech developement - that said, my 2.5 yr old still has one in bed!

If she only has it to fall asleep then I wouldnt worry about it really.

Yes, it's only when she lies down to sleep that she looks for it. She sleeps in the car/pram without it. I think you're right. I'm probably worrying too much about it.
