My Dd is 2.2 but she shouts no and shut up got that last one from her aunties and when I tell her don't shout at mommy she shouts no shout at me! She answers back for everything and if I put her on time out shed never move! Help how do I handle this she also does not like me talking to anyone or using my phone she jumps all over me or hugs me to try and get my attention or says no talking talk to me. I give her lots of attention anyway! She is a very willfull little thing and lovely to but a handful!

So if you put her on time out she stays there? I'd carry on using that then. Do the full routine of warning, explanation, sitting in time out, apology.

When she's trying to get your attention, you need to say firmly 'Mummy is talking to XX now. I will play with you when I'm finished' and then ignore.

Do make sure that you're not spending too much time chatting or on the phone though as 2.2 is still quite young to be entertaining herself for long periods of time. Also need to make sure you don't shout at her/around her or she'll think that it's a good way to communicate.

I would not worry too much about it; just make it clear to her that she is a little girl and you are far too big and important to be swayed or rattled by any shouting or back chat. Often I think the least reaction is the best. Imagine yourself as an oldfashioned competent nanny: 'Now, miss Elaine/master Anthony, isn't that a silly way to behave?'

Thanks for answering me! I do use time out and she does stay there but as soon as its finished five mins after she's shouting again! That why I say she would be on time out all day, I was trying to think pick my battles as I dont want time out to become useless if I use it a lot as she is very little. I dont use the phone a lot or talk to people throughout the day as we are on our own most of the time. We go to lots of play groups and she gets a lot of my time but that doesn't seem enough as she does not entertain herself at all! I will try ignoring it and I do tell her when mommy has finished talking to x we will play or do x, thanks for your comments it's just so frustrating as she has me all day everyday and I don't get a minute not even to talk to dh when he comes home or a friend if they pop in. Oh well there only little once I suppose I'm just being selfish! X

I made dd a costume (a Howler, Harry Potter thing) and told her she could put it on and come and scream at me as long as she liked about anything she liked, and I would just listen until she had finished.

She only did it a few times, but felt sooooo much better once she'd offloaded all her frustration and anger.

Actually, now she's 12 and has a hell of a lot to cope with, I think I might resurrect it. Maybe find a hat she can whip on..... Grin

Jux how old was she at that first point ? Don't think it would work for us at the mo as she is very little but will bear it in mind for when she's bigger x

I think she was only 2 or 3 (that might be along the same lines as "my child spoke in complete, grammatical sentences at 6 months" though!). Definitely less than 4.

A lot of the time tantrums and the sort of thing you're describing has frustration at the bottom of it, so some way of letting off steam helps. DD was only allowed to do it once a day, though in reality did it less often.
