First shoes - when and what kind?

DD is walking by herself now at just 11months. I'm so shocked!
Anyway her Frankenstein lurch is very sweet and she can now walk across the room - maybe ten or more steps - and wants to walk in the park etc.
What should I do about shoes? She's in her baby shoes - leather uppers, elastic, suede soles - you know the kind, but they are no good on wet grass or gravel. I want to buy her button strap shoes from Rachel Riley, but is this wise?

There is plenty of time for her to look adorable in Rachel Riley aloha! Start-rite and Clarks both do pretty (and thankfully also fairly plain) rubber-soled first walkers for babies in your dd's position. We got tired of drenched Bobux in about 2 days.

10 months old! I bet that was a bit of a shock
Well done dd anyway!

what are Rachel Riley?

at the walking, dd2 is 17 months and has only just crawled this week.

Marina · 26/01/2006 14:58

Enjoy the ladies' department aloha. MUCH more fun than boys
dd currently sporting fuchsia pink boots (wear trainies mummy) or navy mary janes.
Can you get to Pares in Blackheath? They have a lovely array of children's shoes but I expect there is a good shop nearer you than that.

Rachel Riley designs gorgeous trad clothes and shoes for children oliveoil. Thank heavens for her sales though...
Dd had rosebud cotton pique sixties shift dress when she was 1 and a half and looked just like Milly Molly Mandy in it...

So different to ds! She's a little livewire.
Pares sounds lovely. Would like it to be a bit special. I think she will love it too. She was trying to put on ds's shoes this morning, and laughing.

I would wait 3/4 months for the Rachel Riley. She will wreck her first shoes at this time of year if you are outside at all much. And they will probably only fit for 6 weeks. DD was so hard on her shoes at that stage.

Would suggest buckles over velcro straps though if she is anything like my DD - regularly removing her first Clarks shoes while in the pushchair. Also beware that some of the Clarks first shoes have flashing lights. DD currently in a pair of Startrite black patent shoes with buckles because she very inconveniently grew a size widthways.

The staff are excellent at Pares, old-fashioned service, brilliant fitters, and lollies where permitted for customers and their patient older brothers

Marina · 26/01/2006 15:03

at the flashing lights Bozza! I never saw any, phew...

Aloha · 26/01/2006 15:05

And I really like Blackheath too. Ds will go for lollies. His shoes do have flashing lights!

DON'T go in Stitches and Daughters afterwards, or Chapter 2 for coffee and cakes, unless your wallet needs to lose weight though

Bozza · 26/01/2006 15:07

I know Marina. I managed to persuade DS out of flashing lights trainers at age 4.7 and never allowed him to have the shoes. But when I was shopping for DD they had this perfectly sweet pair of black patent t-bars and they had little red flashing hearts on the heel which I didn't immediately realise.

Bozza · 26/01/2006 15:08

Yes but do you really want DD's first pair of sweet little girly shoes to have them?
