Hi
My 13mo is not walking, although loves being upright holding on to me or sofa etc and will cruise along the sofa if stood up there, she is slowly starting to pull up etc, she babbles lots of different sounds but no definate mama dadda etc.
We have her one year review on Friday, just really wanted to know what your 13mo is doing and will they class this as "normal", I have had bad experiences with HV's in the past so I am abit dubious
Also she is bum shuffing, crawls backwards but not forwards but still doesnt really like being on her tummy..
Your comments would be much appreciated.

Completely normal. Don't worry at all :)
My ds is the same age, and doing pretty much what yours is doing.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 20/02/2012 09:44

she sounds normal to me. both mine didn't talk at that age but could walk. but I know many children that age who couldn't walk until much later.

choceyes · 20/02/2012 09:47

Totally normal. My DS walked at 14 months, by DD at 12.5 months. Neither talked at that age, but DS had nearly 50 words by the time he was 18 months. Still waiting for 18 month old DD to say something other than mamma, dadda and ball!

lilbreeze · 20/02/2012 09:48

my two couldn't walk or talk at all at 13 months - completely normal!

ballroomblitz · 20/02/2012 09:51

Mine couldn't walk or talk either at 13months. Still wasn't talking at 2yo which resulting in seeing speech therapist for reviews until a few months ago. Now at 4yo you're lucky if you can get him to shut up :)

MintCakeMavis · 20/02/2012 09:58

Exactly the same as my DS at that stage. HV said he was spot in the middle of 'normal' :)

WazzaWoo · 20/02/2012 10:00

Thank you so much for the re assurance, If one more person says "oh she should be walking by now" etc etc!!
Hopefully Fridays appointment will be ok then :)

DS1 exactly the same. He's now ten and he walks and talks!!

thistlemuncher · 20/02/2012 12:00

DS has only just started talking. He was 25 months before he said mummy (for Christmas :) ) I was told by the paediatrician at the TWO year check that 10 words and understanding that words go together is normal. (i.e. bye-bye papa, or something like that).

Although a HV did tell me at that he was stupid at his 1 year check because he couldn't speak. Yawn.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 20/02/2012 12:04

dd2 is nearly 16mo and not talking. i discussed this with the h/v who said that would not consider this a problem until at least 18mo. She told me to be reassured by her babbling, pointing, comprehension and appropriate eye contact.

dogindisguise · 21/02/2012 08:54

Mine isn't walking or talking at 15mo. Sounds normal to me.

peggyblackett · 21/02/2012 09:01

Totally normal :).

Sounds like my ds at that age. He was assessed by several consultant paediatricians at 13mo as I'd volunteered him for some medical student exams where the students get assessed for doing developmental checks. No flags were raised, and he is now a very verbose walking almost 2 year old. Try not to worry.

tantrumsandballoons · 21/02/2012 09:04

My ds2 didn't speak until he was 18 months, now at 8 he won't stop!!
Sounds perfectly normal to me.

My two bum shufflers walked fairly late 18 months +, 13 months is young for real words. As long as they are making a lot of noise, there is not much to worry about (if not, do please get a proper hearing test). At nursery I had to fight at just over 2 that one of mine didn't go into the in between room, as she had advanced language and spoke sentences. Most of the others were still talking baby scribble, and these kids are mainly at selective schools now.
But personally if the HV is worried then get her to refer you, as paediatricians are great, and once any doubt has been put in your mind they can reassure you.
I really wish HVs wouldn't use being referred to a paediatrician as if it's a punishment.

whimsicalname · 21/02/2012 09:19

My boys walked at 18, 19 and 20 months respectively.

And they still just talk nonsense

All children are different, and averages are only average because there's a range of different factors around them. Try not to worry.

Firsttimer7259 · 21/02/2012 09:42

You have some time to go before not walking is delayed (I think til two) and the cruising indicates you are on your way. Do you have any other indicators for concern on talking? Does your child understand simple instructions? Have any words? trying to make words or gestures with sound? Does s/he copy, wave, point? Thats more important than talking or not at 13 months.
Hope review goes well. On HVs: ignore unless you have a good opinion of your particular HV, have a look at the milestones in your redbook and see how you do in relation to that.

thederkinsdame · 21/02/2012 09:50

Every child is different. In my group of friends, our children walked at anything from 9.5 months Shock to 17 months. If she is cruising and babbling I am sure she will get there in her own time. Speak to your HV about your concerns. I am sure they will reassure you.

HSMM · 21/02/2012 09:55

My DD could walk but not talk and her best friend could talk but not walk. They are both fine now (age 12).

As long as she is making sounds, showing signs of understanding what you are saying and weight bearing, then there is probably nothing to worry about.

matana · 21/02/2012 14:22

DS is 15 months and began walking properly (i.e. without help) a few weeks ago, so at 13 mo he was still cruising too. My niece didn't walk till 17 mo. My DS has a few words now but at 13 mo i don't think he did. He said mumum and dadad but i'm not sure they were directed at us! Your LO sounds perfectly normal to me.

startail · 21/02/2012 14:44

DD1 exactly at that age, she didn't bother to talk till she was 2+
DD2 could say a few words, had too DD1 never shut up.
Neither walked till 14 months.

WazzaWoo · 21/02/2012 16:02

Thank you all so much for your responses, sometimes it's so hard to realise that all babies are different!
Had her weighed today and actually saw the HV that will be coming on Friday, she seemed really nice and said how well she was doing so that is reassuring!
Also had her height measured, she is off the scale! haha, funny as i am only 5ft 2! will have outgrown me by the time she is 10 haha.
Thanks all xx

No worries. Dd1 walked at 9mo and talked in sentences at 14mo (she started signing at 6mo). Dd2, same method I used but she didn't walk until 16mo and started speaking at 18. I thought something was wrong with her when she was still babbling at 16mo :) I was glad I taught her to sign too because I'd be lost without the signs :) a year later and while quality of speech isn't as good as dd1 at this age, dd2 is speaking in sentences, great grammar too, and while some words take a bit to spit out she does speak decently. I actually kind of like it. Dd1 grew up too fast. She was a little lady and not so much a toddler because she was so articulate but with dd2 speaking like a toddler, I get to selfishly enjoy her toddler ness a bit longer :)
