Wont take formula

I am going back to work soon and i am struggling to wean my six month old off me and onto formula. She has started taking solids fine, will drink water from a beaker or bottle but is really adverse to formula.

I have tried different sorts (aptimal and cow & gate) and she is not fussed. I am really worried about going back to work in april and she wont be getting her milk in the day. I struggle to express much more than 2 ounces at a time so that seems to be out.

Doe anyone know what i could try instead? I have a few questions.....

  1. Why do they need the milk? (i would feed her from me first and last thing and during night)
  2. Why is cows milk supposidly so bad for them now?
  3. Would it be the end of the world if she just had purees and water in day and then me at night?
  4. what about goat or soya milk - are they acceptable?
  5. has anyone else had this problem and know of any soultions?

Oh and she wont take any formula from me - just wants my boob. Hubby can get a bit down her.........

Thank you xxx

Are you feeding from a bottle? If so it might be the teats. Both my breastfed DSs got on well with MAM teats and blue aptimal - get the faster flowing ones and get DH to do it - don't even be in the room - they smell you!

They can't digest cows milk - too early and it can lead to allergies I believe.

I think it depends a bit how much your DD eats. I could not get my son to drink formula from a bottle or cup ever. It was not for want of trying - he hated bottles.

He started full-time nursery at 8-9 months and bf all night and in the morning and evening (knackering for me!). He ate solids during the day and had a bit of Greek yoghurt or unsugared baby yoghurt (for some reason yoghurt is ok from 6 months due to how the stomach breaks it down even though cow's milk is not) when the other babies had their bottles. The nursery were very supportive although a bit amazed as apparently most babies there love their bottles.

Anyway, he was able to manage perfectly well with no bf from 6:30am till 7:30pm. I cut his day feeds down gradually as he began to eat more solids, so when he started nursery there was no change in routine.

So it is possible if your child is a good eater of solids (DS would have eaten eight yoghurts a day if he could).

Hope that helps.
