Two year old speaking nonsense words occasionally - normal?

It's not getting word pronunciations slightly wrong, it's talking in a made up language. My sis and I did it when older on car journeys and called it 'Funny French'.

It doesn't feel like 'regression' but just wondered if other people's children did this. He laughs when he does it so it seems like a play thing.

In general DS has wide vocab and pretty good pronunciation; he's beginning to put together 3-4 word sentences.

Hi, My DS is 2.6 and does this. He too speaks very well, we have little conversations etc but still has times where he does his made uo language including laughing at himself, so to me I think its normal

Quite normal- he's just playing with his new skills. Wait til he starts doing the "Let's say every word starting with the same sound" thing. It will drive you insane!

YouCantTeuchThis · 18/02/2012 08:08

Both my DC did this. They do it for fun and they also do it when they don't know or can't remember the word they want to use, and it is amazing how it can articulate what they are getting it!

SmileItsSunny · 18/02/2012 08:21

Mine does. If she can't think of the word out is just in silly mods, it's all 'bleugh'....

Oh yes my dd does this as did DS at that age.

Tee2072 · 18/02/2012 08:25

Totally normal. My son speaks what we call 'Adamese', his own language.

It sounds a bit like Klingon. Grin

At about 2y6m my oldest started giving every word the same sound at the start. His favourite was B so we would have "bello nummy blease bave biscuit" etc.

DS2 didn't do it but DS3 is just starting....

Normal, useful playing with sounds and words. Although unintentionally produces a hit of swearingWink

Thanks all. Alana unfortunately I think I've already taught him 'bugger', but you are right; I've noticed a few others happening by accident!

Mine has a made up word, 'pips' for whenever he doesn't know the answer. If you showed him a picture of an animal or a fruit or a vehicle and he didn't recognise it he would say 'It's a pips' and laugh uproariously.

Janoschi · 18/02/2012 13:09

I'm 34 and still do it!

AngelDog · 18/02/2012 15:12

Yes, my 2.1 does this. There are lots of words he can say (and has said) e.g. yellow, train, but he prefers to use his own jargon.

He does a LOT of babbling too. You can often tell which real words it's based around (eg numbers) but they're not real words. If it is based around real words, they're ones that are within his vocabulary.
