Understanding growth chart

My daughters in the high 90s for both growth and height she's 5 months old 20 pounds and 27 inches long and breastfed she was 24 inches long when she was born and almost 10 pounds when she was born I was wondering if she's normal for her height and weight if she was 27 inches long and like 15 pounds I feel she would be awfully skinny so since she's so long her weight sounds like a lot but it is what it should be since she's so long so like if she was 90 and 10 then there would be a problem but 90 and 90 it's right on track for her? And she's only gained 10 pounds in 5 months I don't think that that's too bad since she's grown 3 inches as well aren't babies supposed to double their west by 4 or 5 months so really she's right on track it just seems like a lot but she was so heavy when she was born

So you've had her length and weight checked recently and both are around the 90th centile lines on the growth charts in the wee red book?

Then yes, she is doing well, ideally you're looking for her weight to be a match for her height and it sounds like that's exactly what she is. Don't worry! Did your health visitor not reassure you when you last had her weighed/measured?

My two dd's are the same if that's any help. Both at top of the scale height wise, dd1 is 2 and also at the top for weight, dd2 7 months is on 75th centile line for length but is doing grand, just a slim wee thing.

Hope that helps a little.

She said she was fine but never really explained it to me I was only worried because everyone always says my daughters over weight because she's 20 pounds and only 5 months I try to tell them that she was 10 pounds when she was born and lots of one year olds are just a couple inches taller than her when she was born and she isn't even that rolly polly either she has big thighs and her arms don't even have Michelin man arms so it's not really like she's fat I don't think if I said how much she weighed anyone would have known how much she weighed they would just be like wow that's a long baby

No I totally understand, had exactly the same thing with dd1. Weight is a relative thing, the number in itself is quite arbitrary until you know height/length. Just tell people that your daughter is really long/tall, so she is just the right weight for her height - because she is!

It sounds like she's a very "ordinary" weight for her height/length if she is on the 90th centile for both. Even if she wasn't, it wouldn't be a "problem", as some people are just a bit slimmer or bigger than others, even as babies.

If people make comments, you could try explaining that it's a bit like BMI for adults - a very tall person is a healthy weight when they're a lot heavier than a very short person. The figures are different for babies, and they put them on charts instead of calculating BMI, but the effect is the same. A 90th centile height and 90th centile weight is the same sort of proportions as a 50th for both.

She'll likely end up tall as an adult too, she's just getting ready for being tall and not "too skinny"
