9 month old not crawling?

My 9.5 month DS seems to show absolutely no interest in getting moving and I'm wondering if I should be concerned at all?

He didn't sit unaided till about 7 months and doesn't roll (though he has done, he just doesn't seem to want to) and he's showing no signs really of wanting to crawl, pull himself up or get moving. If I put him on his tummy he gets annoyed and goes into 'skydiver' position (lifts his arms and legs up) and cries if left on his tummy.

He's otherwise fine, happy, alert and sociable and developing well (babbling, clapping etc) so I'm probably worrying about nothing, but my friends babies seem to be way ahead, crawling and pulling themselves up so just wanted to make sure this all seems normal.

No don't worry. Dd was the same at 9 months. At 10 months she started bum shuffling. At 10 months 2 weeks she started walking and she's never stopped! She only learnt to crawl at about 13m.

The minute I found out I was pregnant I was determined to NEVER compare my child to my friends' children. He has done some things before other children and some things after them but I have stayed laid back and not got competitive because it's really not worth it! My DS was always very bright-eyed and alert and got his first tooth on his 6 month birthday, and was sitting up by then. But then it took him AGES to crawl. Every day I was thinking that this would be the day and it wasn't. I think he was over 10 months by the time he got the hang of it, and once he did he was off! He also hated being on his tummy like your DS and it's now his favourite sleeping position! If you really are concerned then see your HV but he sounds fine to me! Enjoy the peace while it lasts because once he does move you'll need eyes on the back of your head! :)

No worries. Some babies miss that stage all together.

Both of mine (boy and girl) could not sit unpropped until past 6 months and just stood up at 11 months and started cruising. They did a bit of bottom shuffling but were never interested in crawling

The boy did go on to have short lived slow developing coordination (he's still quite clumsy but a brilliant footballer AND basketball player at 7! He's a leftie and can do beautiful cursive writing too.)
The girl had a great pencil grip and could cut with scissors independently before 2 and is great at hula hooping at 3.
Ahem...clever right? Grin
Just saying in case you start googling "consequences of lack of crawling"

I bet he turns out to be an early talker!

DD didn't crawl until she was 11 months (waited for family holiday - I reckon she was just waiting for largest possible audience Grin). She walked at 15 months & has been running everywhere since. Grin

My ds didn't sit up unaided til 9 months, the day after I has taken him to the paediatrician as I was worried! He walked at 12 months so all of a sudden went from doing nothing to sitting crawling and walking, I'd give him a bit longer.

Does he sit and reach for toys? My DD never liked being on her tummy but gradually she reached further and further for toys until she could get onto all fours. Once she could do that for a couple of weeks or so one day she just crawled across the room, just before 10 mo. I couldn't believe it! You never know he might do it tomorrow, completely out of the blue.

I know a 12mo who doesn't crawl or walk (in fact he is nearly 13mo) and the paed says he has no problems. Its hard if your friends babies are crawling but try not to compare. In fact if you sit down and list what he can do, you will probably be really proud!

HappyJoyful · 14/02/2012 13:34

Don't wish them moving !! My 14mo daughter has never crawled and now it appears never will (she's almost walking) she developed a very speedy bum shuffle and was totally happy doing that.. She loathed 'tummy time' and I never bothered with it. Was never that interested in rolling either.
Do you have wooden floors or carpets ? I only ask as we have wooden floors and I think this is part of why she never liked crawling on them..I also spoke to another mother of a bum shuffler and she said the same.
Everything will happen at it's own pace.

My 10.5month old is still not crawling, but has started to enjoy cruising around furniture and walking along holding my hands. Put her her on her tummy and she does exactly what you describe - skydiver (great description!). Am sort of hoping she skips crawling tbh because DS crawled for AGES (from 6 months) and it trashed all his clothes until he started walking at 16 months!

Moominsarescary · 14/02/2012 14:13

My 11 month old started crawling just over a week ago, now I can't get him to sit still for two minutes, he didn't show any interested until a week before he mastered it

pinkapples · 14/02/2012 16:05

Just to put your mind at ease some children never crawl and go straight to walking... I wouldn't worry at all just keep encouraging Grin

My dd didn't crawl til 14 months! I made the most of it :)

CMOTDibbler · 14/02/2012 22:26

DS didn't crawl until the week before he was 1, although he was cruising before that. He only crawled for 6 weeks, then walked.

Its totally normal

Miomio · 14/02/2012 22:31

ds1 never crawled at all - just stood up at 14mth or so! Was bloody fantastic - just had to make sure when I left the room that the zone around him had no booby traps - and I could go away and make a coffee etc and the worst that would happen would be that he had plopped over! Enjoy the fact that you have it much easier than lots of others! Very slippy sanded floorboard might too have been the cause..

He is now a healthy happy and very active 5 year old!
