3 1/2 yr old won't go to sleep at bedtime

We follow the same routine as we always have, and now the younger one (20 months) follows same. Always worked up until now - up to bath and bed at 6.30pm, leisurely bath then I put 20mth old down in her room with a couple of books while older sits reading through a couple of books in her bed, then I go in and read 2 books to her while she drinks a cup of milk, then light off about 7.15pm. Only in last 3 or so weeks she's then back up, light on, running up and down hall, sitting in our bedroom with random clothes on that she's found, generally messing about. Have tried all types of responses, nothing works. This often goes on until 9pm... Then she's super tired in the morning and grouchy. Any ideas welcome please!

Can't help as my 2.5yo is currently sitting on her bed making aeroplane noises, whilst insisting that I do not leave the room, but am watching with interest for any good advice that doesn't involve too much effort. My 5yo had a story, lights out an straight to sleep over an hour ago.

We went through this. I had to keep returning her to her bed without talking to her repeatedly until she got the idea. She also takes her special rabbit to bed. Sounds a bit mean but I started to say if you don't stay in bed I will have to take rabbit away and this did the trick as she won't sleep without it Grin

I think I'll try the silent treatment of taking her back to bed - my problem is she finds it all quite funny and never even has the decency to look guilty when I find her up there wandering about singing. I have already been mean and threatened to take her beloved Belle dressing up dress back to the shop but clearly I didn't follow that through so she knows I'm just saying it. I'll try and see what happens tomorrow night. Thanks for that! Mrs Kitty - hope you've managed to get your lo asleep - your message made me laugh out loud!

No they never do look guilty do they! I have to put my stern face on and then return her back to bed. Good luck.
