At what age was your dc able to:
*ride a tri-scooter?
*pedal a trike?
*ride a balance bike?
Ds is 2.7 and can't do any of these yet, despite being very confident in other physical aspects, e.g. climbing. Do you think this is normal development? Not saying we're concerned, but feeling a bit neglectful and maybe should prioritize these a bit more?

DS1 could scooter at 2.6 but it was a mini micro type with 2 wheels at the front so easier to use. Still can't pedal a trike at 3.5 and he hasn't tride a balance bike

littlemissnormal · 12/02/2012 22:05

Both of my DCs were peddling a trike at 3 but through laziness would rather be pushed!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 13/02/2012 13:52

DS (2 today!!) knows how to pedal a trike but hasn't quite got the strength yet.

He knows how to ride a scooter and can do it r-e-a-l-l-y slowly, but he deson't have the cordination or courage to go for it.

He is useless with balance bikes and just falls over

:)

*co-ordination

My Ds is just 3 he has just started riding his scooter very slowly but has trouble turning. He pedalled a trike properly for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We're thinking of getting a balance bike soon as I think he would struggle on a normal bike with stabilisers. So I think your DS sounds quite normal.

That's good to know, maybe we need to be little bit more realistic!

Thanks for all the replies! Smile

It think children develop at so many different times and stages. DS walked at 10 months and could use a Mini Micro scooter at 18 months, he pedalled his bike (with stabilisers) at 3 (was his 3rd birthday present). He hasn't got a balance bike.

DD is 2.1 and she walked even earlier at 9 months, but isn't terribly confident on a scooter. She hasn't tried pedalling a trike or balance bike, but she keeps climbing on ds's bike so she might be ready by the time she's three to inherit his first bike.

yawningmonster · 14/02/2012 08:50

dd is 2.9 and can do all of those things. ds didn't manage a 3 wheel trike until about 4 and 3 wheel scooter was last year at 6. Won't even glance at a balance bike or 2 wheeler. Swings and roundabouts, offer choices and sit back and let their skills and abilities develop at their own rate.

HomemadeCakes · 15/02/2012 10:00

DD is 2.8 but can't do any of those things. She has a trike type thing but she can't reach the peddles (she's very short) and doesn't have a balance bike or a scooter so she hasn't tried these. I'm really not worried - I'm sure she'll get there.

I didn't have a bike until I was 5 years old and never enjoyed riding it - still don't enjoy riding a bike now! Smile

Best thing with the balance bike is to find someone with a competant child who can demonstrate - both riding bikes at the same time. We had balance bike from just about 2yo - but was only on seeing what someone else was doing when he was about 2.4 that it really clicked - copying helps a lot.

mamatomoo · 16/02/2012 23:43

I think you're right, mistlethrush - DH or I doing our best to demonstrate just doesn't cut it! Grin

DD is 2 and I didn't think she could go a trike....

But I caught her doing it at toddler group behind my back today. Sneaky wee bugger.
