Hello, I could do with some advice please. My 10 month old son has tonsillitis (the gp said he was teething but I took him to hospital and got a proper opinion, thats another story!).
I know hes feeling poorly and obviously in pain but he literally wont take any solids, have tried yoghurts, chilled melon sticks, his favourite porridge with fruit and refuses all of them. But he also wont take any milk, only water. He's already on the slim side and Im worried thats hes not getting any food. Also, every time I give him his antibiotics, he gags and throws up. HELP!! Im now into night 4 with less than two hours sleep per night and feeling a bit "on edge" to say the least!

My DS has just got over tonsillitis. He's 14 months. He had a temp of 41 for three days, no sleep, no eating. He would take room temp milk though. Antibiotics kicked in fairly quickly and he has made a full recovery although was very very tired for nearly a week after.

Just keep him hydrated, keep his temp down with Calpol and ibuprofen, keep giving him his antibiotics , some of it will be staying down.

Of course, often tonsillitis is viral not bacterial and then all you can do is wait it out.

A&E if his temp spikes, if he has febrile convulsions (mine did), if it won't come down or just if you are worried.

So sorry he's poorly. It's horrid.

This I'm an expert on!! My 2 both have had recurring tonsillitus from about t age 1 yrs - both have had their tonsills out at the age of 6yrs. So I've had years of experience in this field!!!

Try not to worry about food at the mo, it's more important that he's drinking water so that he dosen't become dehydrated, especially as he has a high temp. Try to get those antibiotics down, they do work miracles. Once they've kicked in he'll begin to want to have cool, soft foods and gradually get back on track. You'll also begin to get your sleep again!! Regular doses of Calpol and Nurofen help tremendously with the pain and temp (I've spent a small fortune on these over the years!). What antibiotics have they given him? The orange one mine hated but they tolerated amoxicillin (yellow sort of banana flavour).

I'm also sorry he's so poorly, I do empathise it's rotten for them and a worry for you but all you can do is ride it through and he'll get better soon. Good luck!!

Yes, i agree that the most important thing is that he's kept hydrated and don't worry about lack of food for a few days. DS is 14mo and has had it twice. Last time he wouldn't even drink water for one day so you can imagine how worried i was! Someone suggested trying icecream - it hydrates them and gives some calories. Good luck!

Thanks ladies, I appreciate the support. Its now day 4 of zero food staying down as what I can get him to eat (few spoons of yoghurt etc) he throws it up again shortly after. We have changed antibiotic as the first orange one was so vile he wouldnt keep it down so now hes on the banana flavoured one and whilst he gags on it, he keeps it down. Hes all skin and bones now so am hoping he'll start eating today properly. Any advice on what to give him, i've stocked up on yoghurts and got some healthy ice cream, any meat dishes that might be ok?

Hope those antibiotics have kicked in today??!! Ice cream, jelly, yoghurts, ice pops, soup and milk. Don't worry too much about being healthy at the mo, he'll soon be back to eating normally again. Poor little chap, hope he's beginning to feel better today. : )
