as much as i offer alternatives etc. I know he is tired after a busy day in reception but i feel so guilty that he is vegetating on front of the box

Mine is the same. He does have a swimming lesson on a Wednesday night but other than that he doesn't do much.

Reesie · 08/02/2012 22:27

She comes home and does some low key stuff as watching a bit of TV and playing with her little sister. She does gymnastics once a week.

NFTA · 08/02/2012 22:27

pink don;t you find it frustrating though? I do like the fact that it gets me of the hook but I really would love some interaction/conversation?!

Usually do homework, play outside/inside with her sister, listen to story CD, read with me etc. Then tea and bath and TV about 6ish till bed.

Today she was knackered though so TV went on at 5.15 ish.

SharkBite · 08/02/2012 22:30

We normally have a chat over homework and tea or during bath

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 08/02/2012 22:30

ThAts all mine does x she's tired we just have tea watch a bit of tv read her book and then bath bed x five is still young and as much as they claim to be bored it's usually clear by their eyes just how tired they r x don't feel bad about it they r up early they are busy all day nothing wrong with tv a snuggle and a little chat about the day x

girliefriend · 08/02/2012 22:32

Monday and Tuesdays goes to a cm so that gets me off the hook til 5.30ish!

Wednesday my mum picks her up and they generally go to the park, do baking or or she will just play.

Thursday she goes to a dance class

Friday is chill out time after school and will quite often let her put on a dvd or watch telly.

I have been on holiday this week and for the first time since she started school collected her every day!!!

So this week on monday we went to a indoor play area and met a friend there for tea, no idea what we did yesterday and today baked some fairy cakes and then she watched telly!

coronet · 08/02/2012 22:33

Tv mostly, with her sister - but she has afterschool club two days a week and the odd playdate. She would play games with me, read or make cakes any time tbh. I should do that more often.

NFTA · 08/02/2012 22:35

you all seem to do a lot more than us. But oddly that is ds's choice not mine. With dd (now 14 ) we seemed to do lots more. I would like to share mor tiem wtih ds but he doesn' seem to want to do anything but watch tv Hmm

Mine goes mental! Every afternoon she rips the place up and turns the living room into a gym. I think she's the kind of kid who tends to get hysterically tired, so it really seems to the untrained eye as if she is really lively and alert when actually she's over-tired. It exhausts me just watching her! Summer is better because then DH takes her to the park after school so she doesn't create such havoc in the house...

PatTheHammer · 08/02/2012 22:43

Reception is really tiring so last year my dd did swimming on one evening and she had to stay at after-school club for a bit on 3 other evenings till I picked her up after work, they do baking, craft, colouring, watch DVDs and play board games there mostly. After tea at home she did some reading and then played with her brother till bedtime.
This year I switched my hours so she only does tuesday at after-school club. That left us with 4 afternoons to fill and I thought she would be happy watching tv and playing at home but no! So she now has beavers on weds, music club at school on thurs and drama group on Friday. Monday she usually has a friend round or goes round to play with friend next door. This still doesn't tire her out, she has a lot of energy in year oneGrin

DS watches TV after school.

If I drive home I can get him to chat about the day (a bit).

He has swimming one evening a week, he's almost out cold by the time we get home.

UniS · 08/02/2012 22:55

today
He fiddled with ice in the garden, then came in, wrapped up some parcels ( he likes selotape) , wrote names in 3 birthday cards, read a bit, had a snack, lolled about a bit, watched a video, read a bit more, had tea, listened to a story, wash, bed.

Tomorrow he's going to play at a friends house. I expect he will spend a hour playing super heros and watch a bit of TV.

Friday he has a swim lesson. He has about 20 mins hanging about at the pool before his lesson to "chat" and have a snack.

I limit DVD/ PC/ Video time. max 1 hour and I'll try and break it up to smaller chunks with his school reading or "helping" round the house.

Ds3 (5) goes to after school club mon-we'd. I pick him up on thurs, dad picks him up on fri and he generally watches television until tea time then homework, bath, bed. We swim, bake, softplay etc at the weekend.

NFTA · 09/02/2012 07:25

you seem to do a lot more than me Blush. Mine really does only wnat to watch TV. I wonder if this is a phase.?

OP posts:
Selks · 09/02/2012 07:28

You could only allow him an hours tv time.

NFTA · 09/02/2012 07:30

i will have to do something. It drives me crazy - esp as no one else wants to watch Cartoon Network!

StayForNoone · 09/02/2012 07:34

Normally does homework, plays her ds, mucks about with her sister and the boys. She doesn't watch as much tv as her older sister who would happily watch it all day every day if she could Hmm the weather will be getting better soon so they will be wanting out on bikes. They have a couple if friends that normally come over for an hour or so after school too.

I wouldn't worry too much about your dd. she will be making friends soon enough and it won't be long until you are wishing she was back watching tv and not running riot through the house!

StayForNoone · 09/02/2012 07:34

Sorry your ds not dd! Confused

Ladygahgah · 09/02/2012 07:51

Mine comes in and does his homework and eats a snack. Monday he swims and Thursday he dances. We do reading eggs daily too(just 15 mins or so and he sees it as downtime and games on the laptop). Sometimes he plays on the CBeebies website. They do sometimes just come in and watch tv too. He does deserve to wind down before bedSmile

coronet · 09/02/2012 08:08

I think it really depends on the dc's energy levels. Dd1 could not have managed any afterschool activities and did not go to after school club either. When she has a home day, she still just wants to watch tv. I tend to suddenly decide my kids are watching too much and put lots of effort into engaging them for a while, then we all slide back! It's winter of course - in the spring everyone has more energy for fun things!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 09/02/2012 08:13

very little.
Tues/Thurs is afterschool club, so we don't get in until teatime
Mon is swimming
which leaves Weds (veg out in front of telly)
and Fridays when MIL collects her from school. MIL follows the Wednesday routine, but with added sweets.

anothermadamebutterfly · 09/02/2012 09:31

If it drives you crazy and you think it is too much then just switch it off and tell him that it is bad for his eyes to watch too much TV and from now on he can watch for 1/2 hour or 1 hour per hour, or whatever seems reasonable. He will find something else to do.
