How do I find one?

I have been getting lots of support about my DD and her problems and I need to know

  1. How do I find an Educational Psychologist
  2. How much will it cost
  3. Is there likely to be a waiting list even privatly

my experience with this is only from legal work, so a difference perspective to yours.

you will be able to get some names/info from the Law Society expert witness site:

www.theexpertwitnessdirectory.co.uk/

Expert reports IME are about £300 to £500.

There may well be a waiting list, particularly for the best people in the field.

Thanks Mummytosteven - it gives me somewhere to start

Our school has an Educational Psychologist that visits. He does an assessment on named children and refers them for relevent help and support.

Have you tried googling EP and your area?

From my experience, how about the BPS directory for a private one?

www.bps.org.uk/e-services/find-a-psychologist/psychoindex.cfm

Find one near you and call them. They will charge depending on what you want them to do.

(Each school should be attached to one, but they have a remit that may not accept what you want for your child).

Or you could see your GP and explain that you want a clinical assessment for your child - if it's about autism etc.

Thanks Annacoach - I think my DD is bright, bored & bullied

The school (head/form teacher) say she is lacking in confidence, her work is barely adequate and she is disruptive

I am starting to think changing school is the only way forward - but it smacks of "running away" - so I though (or my dad did) a private assessment might help us decide who is right me or them

btw this 8yo who is lacking in confidence recenlty took her first silaing qualification, attended a one off dance workshop and has been moved up in her gym class 18 m before she was supposed to be

You could try asking the nagc for a recommendation.

When we had concerns about ds1 his teacher suggested we consult a particular individual. He is an expert in the field of highly able children, and it is the best money we've ever spent (c.£350 from memory - just over a year ago). I can't tell you how much of a positive experience it was.

(If we had gone through the nagc I think they would have recommended the same person to us, for geographical reasons.)

We had to wait 4 months for a consultation.

Thanks I'll have a look at this (when I have 5 minutes)
