Napping and dummy obsession

I am at my wits end :( I just want to know if there are other mums out there whose little angels are having problems with napping for longer that 30 mins?
I've recently started the EASY routine from the Baby Whisperer and DS who is 5 months old is a relatively good sleeper at night, when all is well and no growth spurts, he can do about 7-11, 11-7 or there abouts and go down without a dummy. On most occasions now he can settle himself if he wakes, perhaps with a few reassuring ssssshuses from me.
BUT, I just can't get him to nap for long during the day and he just seems to be unable to settle himself back to sleep once he comes out of his cycle.
I've tried the PU/PD method, but it doesn't seem to work, and even though I'm trying to limit the use of the dummy, on occasion he'll spit it back out.
If we're out in the pram or in the car he can definitely sleep for longer than the 30/40mins so I know he can do it.
Am I just resigned to the fact that this is the norm for him and I should just let him be? Perhaps me trying to extend his naps is just making him more grumpy and annoyed? Are there really babies out there who will do two hour naps twice a day? Tell me your secrets!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem with my 6 month old. He sleeps through at night 8-8 and has been doing so from about four months so I know he can settle himself.
How is your baby during the day? Cranky, looks like he needs sleep or generally happy and alert? If its the latter, I wouldn't worry to much as he sleeps well at night so may be getting 'enough' sleep for his needs. If he is grizzly during the days though he may need that longer sleep in the day.
Have you tried a routine as in for two weeks cancel everything and insist that your baby goes to bed between say 12 and 2?
I've tried everything and Finn will not sleep so I've just given in and stopped trying. He seems ok and as a friend said to me, they'll sleep when their tired...... Well, sometimes!!
Good luck, at least we know eventually they'll grow out of needing naps so we won't have to worry about this forever! X
