3 times now my 2.5 year old has been sat on my lap and has tried to open my mouth and put his tongue in my mouth.

Is this just what toddlers do, explore etc or does this indicate something worrying?

I've name changed of course. I am worried.

I have never known a child to do that. Does anyone else look after him?

mirrored · 30/01/2012 18:14

He's been at nursery for a year, recently changed, new nursery started this week (but this predates that), I am married, he's had a few friend baby sitters. Needless to say I trust all these people.

Could he have seen something on TV....although all he sees is Cbeebies. I feel sick.

I doubt it's television tbh.... I hope you find the answer.
Could you speak to nursery and get advice? Or HV?
How much language does he have? If next time he did it you said, "No sweetheart little people and big people don't d that, we kiss like this" and give him a nice wee kiss and a really big cuddle, would he understand?
If he has good language he might say where he saw it or who showed him it. It might have been another child at nursery who has had this done to them.... don't panic, don't interrogate. I'm sure it will get sorted out, but don't try to ignore it, he's trying to get you to help him sort out something that he doesn't quite understand, isn't he? Wherever he saw it or whatever has happened you are who he needs to sort it out and you won't let him down.

Thank you for the thoughtful post. I'll not it ignore it. His language is probably not good enough really. I think I may talk to a health visitor or something like that. Yes I suppose he could have got it from another child. I am just reviewing the people I know and it's getting me down. It's a very uncomfortable feeling.

You are being very brave, I'm sure your health visitor will be a good person to talk this through with.
I'm here if you want to message, and I wish you all the best x

My little one did that once when I had been eating something and got the taste then she kept putting her tongue in my mouth bearing in mind she was 1-2 ish each time I thought she was going in for a kiss she did it but I to would look a little deeper into this, it could well be curiosity x

If it had only happened once I'd chalk it up to randomness but the fact he has done it 3 times and actually pushes my jaw apart makes me wonder. It doesn't seem quite right to me.

I phoned the NSPCC just as a first port of call. The lady said that if that was my only concern and if he was healthy and happy in every other way that I should just chalk it up to toddler behaviour and just tell him that you don't do that if he does it again. But be open to dialogue and come back if there is anything else. Also that I could talk to his nursery key worker to see if he is doing anything out of the ordinary at nursery. I'm a bit relieved.

Aw I am so pleased, that sounds like brilliant advice from the right people. Well done. He's a lucky boy having such a good mum. I hope all goes well with this x

Ds did that once at about that age. I reacted and said yuck so he then thought it was funny. Bad move!

He certainly hadn't seen it on TV or anything, I think it was just curiosity.

nailbitingfinish · 31/01/2012 14:35

I would say curiousity. Ds once tried to lick my Tongue several times despite my protestations.
