DS is 4yo, he's always been a challenging child behaviourally, always pushing boundaries, and as a result we have always made sure that we are consistent with his consquences and that we behave predictably.

About 6 months ago we finally had a "Eureka!" moment when he just seemed to settle - he was polite, well behaved, funny, friendly, happy and it just genuinely felt like it was all eventually paying off.

However, just a matter of months later, and he did a COMPLETE 180 degree turn.

It's like having a frikkin' newborn in the house again - he just screams and cries and strops the SECOND he hears us say anything he doesn't like.

He will literally work himself into such a rage and a state the he's gulping to breathe, I just don't know what to do any more! As a last resort to try to prevent the constant tantrums about absolutely nothing, we've taken almost all of his toys away and have told him that he's going to have to earn them back with better behaviour, as we just cannot cope with his constant meltdowns all the time.

I'm just at the end of my rope - I love him to pieces and always balance the discipline with lots of love and hugs and kisses, but it's getting to the point that I am starting to not want to be around him. We've been working on this for 3 years now and I just feel like we're not getting anywhere. I know that sounds so awful, but it's just making our home life miserable, and I don't know what to do... Sad

Apparently boys experience a massive surge in testosterone around 4 4/1/2 which might explain the change. Just a thought......

*pigeon" how did I not know this??? I guess that's what happens when you grow up in a family of girls!

Just been Googling, and there's so much out there that explains his current behaviour, as well as some good advice on how to manage it - thank you!

My DS went from a very easy-going chap to a horror what almost seemed like overnight. In conversations with other mums at his pre-school, I soon realised all the others were behaving in the same way! He soon returned to normal - thank goodness!
