Should DD have words at 11mo?

She has clearly said Daddy to DH a few times and has copied ball -orl and shoe - oooh, woof - woof and hello, brabbo.
There is no consistency to any of it though.

Sounds like she is doing really well!! Mine is 14.5 months, has mama, dada, Hi, cat, star (sar), and grunts for yes and no!

BabydollsMum · 30/01/2012 23:18

Sounds about the same as my near 1yo - Da, Mumumum, hi - I've found sometimes she gets the end sound correct - eg dog is gah, cat is ted etc. You really have to listen out though or you miss them (unless I'm totally reading WAY too much into it!) She did call herself a 'goo gir' this morning though for sleeping through. Bless!

My DD is coming up for 10 mo and not even babbling syllables yet. So to me your DD sounds like she is doing really well! And mine is a little behind with that whole speaking thing...

fbnomore · 30/01/2012 23:23

tuneful babble i think. that and general non verbal communication. at 18 months the guide is six words, but its very variable.

RobinSparkles · 30/01/2012 23:27

Some do, some don't. They should have about 50 words by the time they are two and they don't have to be the correct words ie. baddit for rabbit counts as a word even though it might not be understandable to everyone as rabbit.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 30/01/2012 23:29

She sounds like she's doing just fine for 11 months :)

DC3 is 19months and has no words. He just grunts and points. But he understands what I am saying/asking him (to a certain extent obviously).
I'm not worried, DC2 did the same. Suddenly at 2.5 she was coming out with whole sentences and now I can't shut her up Grin DC1 was even later when he started to talk. Can't shut him up now either - one of his favourite things to do is have a debate Grin

StickAForkInMeImDone · 30/01/2012 23:34

Should say DC1 is now 12, and all his teachers remark what an articulate boy he his. I think the DC didn't feel the need to talk because I did all the talking for them and only gave them the chance to say yes or no Blush

Thank you everyone.
She is my PFB so worry about everything.
She doesn't copy sounds very much but has a go at the odd word, guess its only the ones that interest her! There has not been any mm sounds for ages (seems to go through phases and its all b at the moment) so no mamma or mumma yet Sad.
She does understand a lot, follows basic instructions (sometimes) and does a urrhh grunt/squeak noise when she wants something or you are not quick enough with her food Grin
A HCP did mention though that she is not clapping or passing toys/food to us when asked. She is not really pointing either, rather just reaching and doing her urrghh squeak.
Am fed up of questioning everything she does (she is seeing some docs about not being mobile yet).

I would change HCP to be honest.

'Not passing toy/food to you when asked' - very few 11 month olds would do that, what a strange and needlessly worrying comment to make!

As for not mobile - who on earth thinks this needs intervention at 11 months? I know plenty of 'Buda' babies who didn't move until well after that, then couldn't be stopped!

Really, you need to have a think about who you are letting worry you.

ZeroMinusZero · 01/02/2012 19:00

I agree that the hv sounds odd, there is nothing to worry about an 11 month old not clapping yet.

EBDteacher · 01/02/2012 19:25

Don't think my DS had any words apart from mumum, dada, name of his cm and doggy on his first birthday. He also wasn't pointing and I was worried.

He's now 17mo and has at least 50 words and is speaking in sentences. 'No you come me' was today's classic when I asked him to come to me. He has discovered language allows him to be in control so now it is top priority.

He also points like a pro accompanied with 'ooh ducky there' or 'water me' etc and will point at anything he's asked to in a picture etc.

So basically DON'T WORRY. I have found that it tends to be just at the point where you're having a mild panic that they're never do something that they do it. I'm now thinking that DS is never going to run. Grin
