My DD has a 98th centile head and has had good head control (didn't need support for most things, though obviously we were still v careful!) since about 8 weeks. Why do you ask?

My ds was born at 33 weeks and was very poorly . He is 7 months but should be 5 . He has always struggled with head control and has a big head . He is under paed care and physio and he is improving . I just wondered what term babies do .. As with everything there is a big variation .

Absolutely, and a big variation in what parents would describe as 'full head control'. Hope someone else can offer some better words of wisdom than me!

Thank you for replying anyway .

Hi.
Dd1 had a big head, born 2 weeks late and had head control in the first week. (sat unaided by 4 mths).
Dd2 average head size, born 1 wk early, couldn't sit unaided until 13mths, and no proper head control before then.
So I guess I've not been very helpful, other than illustrate how big the variation can be.

No that is very helpful..I guess it proves exactly what I thought I knew.

DS 3 months, was a term baby, but also quite ill.
very big head. Some head control since 8 weeks but not perfect, seems to get tired quickly. He is having physio too.

My ds gets very tired too despite sleeping flat out for 12 hours and having 3 naps in the day . He is now 7 months but should be 5 and has just got proper control now . when I saw the consultant paed at corrected age 4.5 months he said that ds was within the normal range and my physio says they only start to worry around 6 months onwards . I have just done loads of tummy time and he is now rolling over too so we are now practising sitting up Smile

Another one with huge variation - DS1 had a 98 percentile head size (big baby all over though, not just his head), 2 weeks late, great head control pretty much from birth - I never had to think about supporting his head. Sat unaided at 4.5 months.

DS2 had a 50th percentile head (other measurements between 50th and 75th centile - head was roughly in proportion). He was born just over a week early. I really worried about his head control and general flopiness, but actually he was probably just "normal" and I was comparing him to his brother. He had good enough head control to face outwards in the baby bjorn / go in a jumperoo etc by about 4 months, and sat unaided at about 7.5 months.

My DS (now 9 months) has a huge head (98th percentile, but he's in proportion as is on the same percentile for length and weigh as well) and I felt he was quite slow compared with other babies his age to have good head control. I think it was around 4 months he gained good control (eg. to sit in bumbo/face out in jumperoo) and he only sat unaided at just under 8.5 months. All within normal range I think.
