Recently, my DD has started putting her fingers to the back of her throat and making herself gag. Once she heaves she does it again and again. A neighbour who works with children advised that it was a common phase was a phase. I kep tan eye on her but didnt react and the problem seemingly went away for a month or so.

Now shes doing it for prolonged periods and making herself vomit. Shes only doing it when I'm out of the room or in bed though. She'll use her fingers, entire fist or a toy to do it. Shes done it twice today already.

Shes always slept through the night and had a nap during the day but this past week she wont nap and its a struggle to get her to bed at night. We put her down and she'll go straight to sleep but after 15 minutes wakes up to play. She'll quite happily play by herself for 5 minutes (she self settles so we always wait to see if we're needed before we go to her) and when realises no ones come for her begins to cough until she gags and vomits.

She does have a cold at the moment and is teething but Im not sure that its connected as she started this before Christmas. Shes also become really clingy and is constantly whinging for attention. If I dont react straight away, (for example; today I was making lunch for the first incident) she'll begin to cough then vomit.

Is this a phase? Or attention seeking behavior? Or is something actually wrong?

It sounds like she's teething and trying to ram her fist in her mouth to get some relief. The gag reflex can be quite strong at that age so it's not unusual to make her vomit.

See if giving her neurofen for children stops it - it may point to bad teething pain if it suddenly stops when she's had some pain relief.
