Should my DS be saying more? He said teddy just before his first birthday but has stopped saying this, or says it infrequently. He says 'ta' and 'dat (that)', ba-ba when we sing BA BA Black Sheep, and has said bye-bye twice (in front of his child carer and me, so I have witnesses Grin..., dada and mama (occasionally the latter)

But nothing seems to be consistent or once he says it, it's not like he says it over and over again (except dada). He is very very babbly, people constantly comment on his noise and range, and he really watches our mouths when we talk or sing to him (hence the BAA BAA).

I am not sure if this is in line with peers, or whether I should be encouraging more etc.

Thanks

Well my 18 month old DD has barely 6 recognisable words yet, so I wouldn't worry just yet Smile

NoWayNoHow · 26/01/2012 10:06

Developmentally, at 12 months there really aren't normally more than 2 or 3 very basic words (mama, dada, etc) so you're fine.

NoWayNoHow · 26/01/2012 10:07

Sorry, that should have said 13 months

PaschaAndCustard · 26/01/2012 10:10

My 16 month old says daddy, mumum, nan, cat (at), doggy (ogee). He didn't really babble all that much til gone 14 months. Now he's babbly chatting with the occasional recognisable sound.

Limelight · 26/01/2012 10:11

Not something you should be worrying about. DD isn't quite 13 months yet - she says Mama, Dada, and 'dere!' which i think is 'there' but can't be sure. I'm quite impressed with her to be honest. She's a lot more verbal than DS was at the same age.

My DD barely said anything until she was 3 and then went from the odd single word to full sentences in a week.

As long as he is listening and understands what you are saying there is nothing to worry about.

Machasma · 27/01/2012 18:21

My 14 month old only makes farm animal noises (except a cow then he signs milk!) and doesn't say anything except mama dada and bye

eeyore2 · 27/01/2012 18:25

My ds had about 10 words at 13 months and some were not very recognisable eg "Da" instead of "Mummy". He started to really increase his vocab at around 18 months. Now he is 26 months and I can't shut him up. He recently said the gramatically correct but quite irritating sentence "i need to eat more chocolate cake now, because I love chocolate cake".

pippop1 · 27/01/2012 18:43

You could have his hearing tested if you are worried.

gamerwidow · 27/01/2012 18:57

DD had only one word from 13 months to 17 months which was "no" accompanied by shaking head. She is now 18 months and her vocabulary has exploded and she can even manage short sentences now.
I definitely wouldn't worry at 13 months especially if he is babbling.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 27/01/2012 19:44

My 13mo DD says No, Dad, Dog, she also has a multi purpose sound, like ma ma, it can mean mum, more, I want.......nothing is said clearly though, I wouldn't worry, she is nowhere near saying Teddy.
