Help - DD (4) asked me this this morning. (DP said ask Mumsnet). Any ideas of an answer - truthful but not too much information.

Mummies have eggs in their tummies and daddies have seeds in their penises (or is this is too much info, just say daddies have the seeds inside them) and when the seed and the egg are put together it grows into a baby.

This what I plan to tell my 4 year old if he asks. And yes, I have thought ahead to what if he asks how the seed gets into mummy's tummy to reach the egg. I will say that it is a special sort of cuddle that only mummies and daddies can do.

bootsmonkey · 19/01/2006 17:16

and 'how did I get out of your tummy mummy' asked by DD 3.8yo at bedtime yesterday. I said I would tell her in the morning and thanfully she has forgotten!

IlanaK · 19/01/2006 17:30

Ah - we have had the how did I get out chat already. Not a problem in my case as I had two csections and just told him they cut open mummy's tummy, take the baby out and put sew me back up again. Not sure what I would say if I had a vaginal delivery. Probably something along the lines of mummy's have a hole down there that the baby can get out of when he is ready to live outside mummy's tummy.

My DD is donor-conceived (ie via IVF with, in our case, donated eggs) and we have a very simple little book for her to start learning about her own story, later on. The beginning bit says: to make a baby you need an egg from the mummy, sperm/seeds from the daddy, and the mummy's tummy to grow the baby in.

From there on in, obviously, the story deviates from the usual - but I liked the language generally.

DS1 aged three:

"Mummy, did you buy me?"

"No dear, Daddy and I made you together."

"Did you bake me in the oven?"

"No, I grew you in my tummy like a little flower in a pot."

"Can I go back in your tummy?"

singersgirl · 19/01/2006 18:20

When the question came up, I told both DSs that they came out from a special hole between my legs which is kind of stretchy so normally is very small. DS1 was quite keen on seeing it, so we looked at pictures in books.

We have done the egg/seed stuff but neither has yet asked how the seed and egg get together. Haven't planned an answer yet, so would be grateful for any suggestions on this thread!

geekgrrl · 19/01/2006 18:21

awww bless. like the idea of baking them in the oven.

Meanoldmummy · 19/01/2006 18:22

My DS1 knows that it was a big squeeze, and there were doctors helping mummy to get him/his brother out of mummy's tummy through the little hole - he thinks it's hilarious and that mummy is very clever being able to make babies!!

Aloha · 19/01/2006 18:24

I tell ds all that time that he grew in my tummy ('did I like it in there' 'Oh yes, you were very warm and cosy and it was like having a nice cuddle') and that the doctors helped him and his sister come out my tummy. He isn't terribly interested at the moment. More interested in whether I personally built our house

FairyMum · 19/01/2006 18:31

I tell it a bit like IlanaK and they just look at me like I am mad and give up asking because they don't think they are getting a sensible answer....

nikkie · 19/01/2006 19:02

My dd2 told meshe didn't like it in my tummy so she came out of my mouth!

Elibean · 19/01/2006 19:30

Today, after a very large lunch, dd stuck her little belly out and said she had a baby in her tummy

hana · 19/01/2006 19:36

I had this tonight reading stories to dd1!! but HOW did the seed go inside you mummy? couldn't think of a good answer at the time, like the special cuddle that mummies and daddies do....wonder if she'll remember in the morning, I'm sure she will...

poppiesinaline · 19/01/2006 20:04

LOL. I remember telling DS1 about how babies came out of mummies when he asked. I said something like "mummy has a very stretchy hole in her bits and when the baby is ready the baby comes out of it." His reply was "ooooo, bet that hurts!"

motherinferior · 19/01/2006 20:24

Following the advice of many a wise MNer, I've recently re-read the Inferiorettes Mummy Laid An Egg. They are very impressed at the idea they have eggs inside their own tummies, and Inferiorette#2 repeats this fact self-importantly and frequently.

I've also followed the Codster's line on 'a wee hole, a poo hole and a baby hole'.

Only person who ever gets a bit embarrassed about it is DP

hannahsaunt · 19/01/2006 20:50

Ds1 was very intrigued to learn the difference between a gynaecologist and an archaeologist...

pumpkin7 · 19/01/2006 20:50

I bought the 'mummy laid an egg' book for my ds1 when I was expecting ds2 but I think dh had more fun reading it than anyone else

MumtoLaura · 20/01/2006 09:41

Well I followed Ilanaks advice last night, DD asked how the seeds get to the egg, but I avoided that question I'm afraid . I'm going onto Amazon now to buy Mummy lays an egg!

when my aunt was asked by her 4 y old ds where babies came from she replied " its when mommy and daddy have a speceal little cuddle and then a baby is made" and he was quite happy with answer and went away to carry on playing.I think that quite cute close to the truth but not too close, I think thats what i will tell my dd when she asks depending on her age of course. I dont think a young child wants too much infor just enough to satisfy their curiosity.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/01/2006 07:41

Mummy Laid an Egg is pretty detailed. I love it, and own it, and am very happy it exists, but it does include willies and so on.

(MI, I'm so glad you're giving your kids accurate information. I had no clue about my own anatomy as a child, which is pretty broken.)

MumtoLaura · 26/01/2006 19:39

I've just had Mummy lays an egg delivered, and I'm quite shocked by high graphic it is - particularly the kamasutra page . Motherinferior old how were the inferiorettes when you fist read the book to them?

DD has just read this book and actually did comment on the standing on their heads pictures: "Hmmmm, I'm not sure about that...." I could hear her father in the background muttering something about it not being in Mummy's repertoire, but I chose to ignore him.
