It's a FULL on, back arching, no cuddling except to make it worse tandrum. Am getting upset myself now. No reason for it - he just woke up from his 1 1/2 hour nap and went into it. 19 mths old - any ideas/ sympathies/ how to stop it???!!! :(

Turn on the telly?

Make a cup of tea, leave the room and when you come back, say with a smile on your face 'would you like a big cuddle now'.

They need opportunities to stop the tantrum when they are stuck in it.

He'll sleep well tonight! Wink

My DD does this after her nap too - what is it with that?

I stand by offering things like "Would you like a cuddle?" and "Would some milk help" and "Is something hurting?" until it passes.

(and sometimes I turn on the radio) :)

I remember DS used to do this. I found a change of situation helped, I'd bundle him in the pushchair and take him out to the park or take him to his bedroom and start playing with some toys, or take him into the living room and put the telly on.

Good luck.

Oh god DD used to do that every day after her nap. Tv was the only thing that worked - specifically The Very hungry Caterpillar DVD.

Thanks all. 2 and a bit hours and we're through to the other side! That was the worse worse ever and I am not looking forward to future ones. The telly was on throughout but not effective until nearer the end. Tea and leaving the room definitely helped. Thankfully the rest of the evening routine carried on without further fuss and fingers crossed he's tired himself out! x

mine used to do this after his afternoon nap in the month before he stopped having afternoon naps at 22m, do you think he might be ready to drop the daytime naps possibly? just a thought........ it takes a bit of getting used to, but mine is now 27m and the days are full on, no naps, he sleeps like a dream at night including going off to sleep within minutes at bedtime (7pm). on the rare occassion he sleeps during the day now he is still a bit of a grizzly bear on waking.....

bbcmummy · 25/01/2012 17:34

Yes, I have been wondering if he's ready to drop his naps. I'm a bit scared to not let him have it though as I think the tantrum is probably due to tiredness and the hour and half nap just wasn't long enough! Each day as comes though, maybe in a few months time there'll be no naps! x

Mine used to do this after his nap too.

I don't know what it was but he was always ok after some sweet fruit and milk.

I started leaving a bowl of strawberries or something on the coffee table and milk just before he woke up. Then when he came in I'd just leave him to it until he'd eaten and he'd be fine again.

brightonbleach · 25/01/2012 17:58

oh yes, mine always needs a drink the second, and I mean the very second, he has woken!

when they are trying to drop their naps they do tend to seem to be tired but its seems to work out better all round to get them to go through to evening without the nap and then they sleep a nice deep sleep at night - mine stopped seeming tired even after the 1st week of no day naps! Wine for mummy after bedtime is recommended......
