dd, who is 3.5, said to me this afternoon, 'Mummy, please don't call me Minnow any more. You can call me Tabitha, that's my name.'

she's growing up way too fast!

Dont worry........ds(3.9) now wants to be called Annabel!!!

And if you ask him his real name he says it is Maximino (which is our pet name for him as his real name is Max)

My immediate family still call me by my family nickname, but with everyone else I use my full name. My sister decided she didn't want to be known as her normal nick name (Bee for Bridget) when she was about 16 or so, and I think it did hurt my parents feelings. I can't really see why I should object, although if anyone outside of my family tries I will let them know it's off limits!

Hausfrau my mother impressed on me very early that the shortening of my name that most people try (I have a very unusual name that is quite like a fairly common name that is normally shortened) was pretty pants, so I never let anyone use it, so it is possible that your son may not go for the short version of his name.

My ds is William, and we shorten it to Will, but usually call him Will-will/Willsy/Mr.Chubby. He's only 13mths, so we still get away with it.

Dd is Charlotte and has recently been dubbed 'Charl' by her girlfriends. Very cool.

Special names don't disappear for long though - it's a temporary thing. My dd is quite happy to be called and referred to as 'the Noop' she's 14

Spagblog · 22/01/2006 07:34

We were wondering yesterday when we would stop referring to DS as "Little Man".
Even DD shouts "Lickle Maaaaaan!" when we are out kicking a ball around.
I expect when he is a strapping 6 footer

Meanoldmummy · 22/01/2006 12:51

I'm going to cling stubbornly to the DSs pet names. It's mummy's privilege. I will still be calling DS2 Bubblebumpkin on his wedding day.

Prufrock · 22/01/2006 13:15

DD is still happy with Bunny, but she did call me "mum" the other day. I veryquickly told her taht I was not um, I was Mummy, and always would be, and would not answer to anything but that (Oh and Mummy dearest bestest mummy in the whole wide world)

Meanoldmummy · 22/01/2006 13:17

DS1 called me "mum" the other day, and he sounded all worldly-wise...it sent a chill down my spine. he's only 3, I am NOT ready to be mum yet!! What age do they usually make the transiton from "mummy" to "mum"????

MrsBadger · 22/01/2006 13:24

They do come round again - I saw my family recently and realised we still call each other Horace, Sprocket and Muthley.
(I remember having the 'Don't call me Mum!' battle with my mother too, which is how she ended up with Muthley)
