I taught my DS to stand up straight away as he found it more fun which helped with potty training - he was also about 3. With regards to the foreskin you have to wait until it retracts naturally (I think they just play with it as boys do which helps it along), don't try and force it. DS showed me very proudly when he could retract his Hmm so I showed him in the bath how to clean it. He is 4 nearly 5 and this was recently but I think it is different for all boys.

sheeplikessleep · 23/01/2012 13:53

Retracting foreskin to clean? Should we be doing this? DS1 is 4 and other than a sit in the bath, I don't do anything like that.

curlycreations · 23/01/2012 13:53

oh thanks -its not the kind of thing that some people would talk so appreciate your reply -and you have given me rough idea of age so thanks again

DS1 was a sit-down wee boy until he went to school. DS2 started standy up wees a lot sooner (like at 3) as he likes to do them at the same time in the same toilet Hmm. However, he took a while to realise that he cannot do standy up poohs Shock at the same time.

So I'd keep the sitting down as long as possible. And I've never touched anyone's foreskin, they do their own stretching/retracting while I look the other way.

IWantMyHatBack · 23/01/2012 13:56

DS got the hang of peeing standing up while he was in the bath. Didn't attempt it while out until he was 3.5 though - otherwise he'd end up with widdle-soaked trews Grin

sheeplikessleep · 23/01/2012 13:57

DS1 was peeing sat down for a while, before we suggested he stand up. i wanted to be sure he wasn't going to poo stood up and knew the difference between the two. he was probably about 3 and a half.

curlycreations · 23/01/2012 14:00

i think the foreskin needs to be kept clean to prevent smeg-cheese like and things like fungal infections

Don't do foreskin. Ds1 is 6!!! Should we?

Ds1 watched a friend of his wee standing and was converted (around 4yo). Ds2 watched his brother and did it straight away from 2.

Seona1973 · 23/01/2012 14:14

the only person who should be retracting the foreskin is the owner of the penis! DS is 5 and when he is in the shower I get him to retract it a bit and then we give it a rinse with the shower head. Some foreskins dont retract until much later and as long as they have no pain/infections then nothing needs to be done about it. DS was peeing standing up from age 3.

moogalicious · 23/01/2012 14:18

curly that's not true, at least not with young boys. Ds was referred to the hospital age 4 or 5 because he foreskin wouldn't retract. The consultant said it was fine, not to retract to clean and was a bit Hmm at the doctors referral. Ds is 7 and still can't retract it.

KnitterNotTwitter · 23/01/2012 14:22

From what I remember DS has been weeing standing up since about 2.5... Daddy gave him a demonstration and lesson one morning and that was it. We've never had a wee/poo combo problem when standing.

FredFredGeorge · 23/01/2012 14:37

in and around my foreskin stayed completely clean without any retracting of it specifically to clean until I no longer had a foreskin. as Seona says, don't start doing it unless there's really a problem, and you shouldn't ever need to do it, your son can clean it if it does.

NoWayNoHow · 23/01/2012 14:42

DS potty trained standing up for wees, so he was 3 for that.

I didn't think he was ready for cleaning under the foreskin yet (he's just 4yo now), but he's just been diagnosed with an infection so will start cleaning now!!

NoWayNoHow · 23/01/2012 14:52

BTW, the GP said that cleaning should commence when foreskin retracts as urine can get trapped which is what causes infections.

I would assume therefore that cleaning before it retracts (a) isn't necessary and (b) isn't even possible.

pipoca · 23/01/2012 15:01

Here in Spain they insist on retracting it from birth and do it at every health check, even if it makes it bleed Shock tis horrid. Sad They claim it is necessary to stretch it so that they don't get fimosis later, which is TOTAL BOLLOCKS and in fact the retracting is far more likely to cause problems ending up in fimosis (too tight foreskin) and therefore circumcision, as each time you retract it before it's ready you tear the skin and cause scar tissue/adhesions, making the opening smaller and smaller, before you know it, it's too tight and they get infections and need to be circumcised.

DH is circumcised for this very reason and at least 4 of his friends are too.
From what I've read the foreskin naturally separates (for want of a better word) at about 5 or so but that the general fiddling that little boys do is enought to naturally stretch it all it needs and then later it can be kept clean once it's looser IYSWIM.

Leave the foreskin be!

As for peeing standing up, DS is 3.9 and does it sitting down as otherwise it goes all over the shop!

curlycreations · 23/01/2012 15:16

yes i have no intentions of forcing the matter i just wanted to know the aprox age when he will have to be told what and when to do it
and from the answers i am getting the idea it is around 5-7 years and yes that is too old for mummy to be intervening -thanks for the helpful replies

Don't EVER teach them to pee standing up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will regret it until they leave home......every morning now I am woken by the waterfall that is my 6 foot plus 17 year old in the bathroom and it sounds like a carthorse on cobbles!!!!! Plus, i routinely wake in the 'wee' small hours to pop to the loo and find myself standing or worse still sitting in puddles caused by poor directional skills!!

If you feel you absolutely must - try one of these!! Grin good luck

SoloD · 23/01/2012 16:25

Don't allow books/magazines/newspapers in the loo either!!!!

Or build another loo just for you.

Wolfiefan · 23/01/2012 16:27

Agree totally with Spike. NEVER!

Theas18 · 23/01/2012 16:32

Another "let school teach them to stand up and wee, till then get em sitting down to avoid wet patches"!!

Agree with pipoca- I've no idea why forced foreskin retraction is till practised, it's known to cause scarring and phimosis . Wave your willy around in the bath is quite enough to clean it when they are small. "pull back the skin and wash beneath" is and instruction to be shouted at a much bigger (pre teen) boy in the same why as you would shout " and don't forget to clean your teeth" from outside the bathroom! Also no soap on willies - just wash it with water is what I always understood- trapped soapiness must be sore!

pranma · 23/01/2012 17:54

dgs will be 3 next month and has started to want to wee standing up [like his daddy and big brother] but when he does it goes everywhere. He has been fully toilet trained for 8 months now but this develpment has meant pre-school sending home wet clothes :(
dd has told him to sit down at school and they are helping him with his 'aim' at home :)

MerryMarigold · 23/01/2012 18:33

It does depend on the kid. My 6yo is a bit...well...haphazard in his aim. Ds2 (3yo) never spills a drop and stands there for ages afterwards till everything's dripped off, so no damp pants. Bless 'im.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 23/01/2012 19:00

DS is just 3 and he sits to wee on the potty but stands to wee in the toilet. Tickles me when he has a wee then puts the seat down to go for a poo as well, why not just sit for everything? And fancy having to decide before you start whether or not to have a poo Grin

DH quite often sits down to wee as well though, because he is lazy or drunk
